State confirms first human mosquito-borne virus of 2020

ADRIAN — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), along with the Ottawa County Health Department, confirmed Wednesday the state’s first human infection with a mosquito-borne virus for 2020.
The infected resident of Ottawa County tested positive for what is known as Jamestown Canyon virus.
The virus, according to a news release from the Lenawee County Health Department, is spread through bites from infected mosquitoes. Most of the confirmed cases of the virus occur from late spring through mid-fall. Illness can develop from a few days to two weeks following a bit from an infected mosquito.
While most people do not become ill, initial symptoms can include fever, headache and fatigue. In very rare cases, the virus can cause severe disease, including infection of the brain — encephalitis — or the lining around the brain and the spinal cord — meningitis.
Michigan reported its first two cases of Jamestown Canyon virus in 2018 in residents in Oakland and Menominee Counties. In 2019, only one cases was detected, with that patient residing in Cass County...
