Dengue, Malaria Cases Up In Sarawak Since Last Year
SIBU, Jan 10 (Bernama) -- More people in the state were afflicted with dengue and malaria fever between last year and Jan 2.
According to a statement from the state health department here on Sunday, 4,579 cases of dengue fever were reported during the period as compared to 1,527 cases in 2008.
The Miri District had the highest at 990, followed by among others, Kuching District (838), Sibu (516), Sri Aman (265) and Sarikei (264).
On malaria, the statement said that 2,144 cases were reported in 2009, as compared to 1,878 cases during the same period the previous year.
It noted that seven malaria-related deaths were reported during the period, with Long Keluan, Long Jekitan, Long Liau and Long Bee in the Marudi district and Lusong Laku in the Belaga district, still considered as very active Malaria outbreak areas.
On chikungunya, 2,505 cases were reported with the Samarahan Division while on the pandemic A(H1N1), until Jan 4, this year, 1,659 cases were recorded.
On the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, 9,547 cases were reported, with Sibu having the most cases at 3,103.
