CDC: New Lyme disease bacteria discovered

A new culprit behind Lyme disease has been discovered, and it can cause even nastier symptoms than its predecessor. Of all 600 species of ticks the Mayo clinic tested, three percent were carriers of the newly discovered bacteria.
Mayo Clinic scientists say they have found a new species of bacteria causing Lyme disease in the Midwest, with elevated levels of bacteria in the blood.
But unlike B. burgdorferi, B. mayonii can inflict nausea and vomiting, as well.
Schaffner also said the findings may help many others if they have suffered from a mysterious illness that turns out to be this new species of bacteria.
"It was a fortuitous discovery", said Dr. Bobbi Pritt, director of the Clinical Parasitology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. They made a decision to investigate further when a tiny fraction of patients showed signs of something new...
