    RAUTAHAT, Dec 17: Two more persons died of cold in Rautahat district following the cold wave and fall on mercury during the last one week. The number of death toll in Rautahat district reached six.

    The 70-year-old Indra Mati Devi Singh of Haminiya VDC-5 died of cold last night while Jagdev Mahato of Mudwalaba VDC-9 died of same cause on Saturday morning.

    BIRGUNJ, Dec 17: As Tarai continues to reel under severe cold wave, two people have died in Rautahat district on Saturday due to cold while a little boy in Taplejung also succumbed to the chill.

    Indumati Devi Sah, 70, of Hajmonia-5, and Jagdev Mahato, 60, of Mudwalwa died Saturday morning due to cold, according to Rautahat Police.

    Similarly, two-year-old Anjan Maden of Hangdewa, Taplejung died while sleeping, reports our correspondent Khagendra Adhikari. The toddler, whose mother was away from home, had apparently slept at night without blanket and mattresses under the open sky when his father had gone out to attend a wedding reception nearby.

    With the deaths on Saturday, the cold has claimed total six lives in the past three days. Nanku Pandit, 58, of Pathrabudhram, and 40-year-old, ironically named, Pnuemonia Devi, of Santapur Dostana-3, had died of cold on Friday while Shyam Thakur, 45, of Parsa-6, and Upendra Jha, 55, of Dharmapur-3, had succumbed on Thursday.

    Cold wave claims 7 in Terai

    Rajbiraj, Dec 17, Seven persons died of a cold wave that has been sweeping across several parts of Terai for the past few days.

    Four, including two children, died in Sapatari with the sharp fall in temperature over the last five days.

    A 20-day baby of Rupakumari Mandal, a resident of Mahadev Village Development Committee-3 of Saptari and one year old Sajhana Chaudari died while undergoing treatment at Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital for cold related complications.

    Similarly, Sita Ram Yadav, 50, of Malekapur-5 died of cold related complication, informed Yadav?s friend Ram Lakhan Mukhiya.

    A college student Promad Chaudhari, a resident of Govindapur, also died while he was asleep at a rented room at Rajbiraj Municipality ward No. 5. He was studying engineering at Chhinnamasta Educational Academy

    Similarly, the freezing cold has also witnessed death of an elderly person in Banke district.

    According to police, the man, about 65, died Friday evening at Karkado. His identity is yet to be ascertained

    Thick fog and sharp fall in temperature for the past five days has escalated the number of children suffering from pneumonia.

    Dr Abadesh Kanta Jha from Janakpur Zonal Hospital informed that 10/15 children suffering from pneumonia visited the hospital on a daily basis.

    "People suffering from cough, diarrhea and asthma is also increasing," said Jha.

    Dr Surendra Kumar Yadav from Janaki Medical Research Center said that the number of patients visiting the center for curing pneumonia, cough and cold, and diarrhea was increasing.

      More than 22 people have died during a cold wave in southern Nepal, local media reported Tuesday.

      In Mohattari district, 14 had died since Sunday, according to Avenues Television. Two hundred schools were closed in the district and the local hospital was packed with pneumonia patients.

      Eight people had died in other districts of the Tarai region.

        Cold claims 3 in Mahottari

        With the sharp fall on mercury, the number of people succumbing to cold has reached three in Mahottari district.

        According to the District Police Office Mahottari, two people who fell sick due to cold on December 8 died on Sunday.

        The deceased have been identified as Uttis Sardar, 70, of Hariharpur- 9 and Laxman Das Baishnav. All the victims of severe cold are above 60 years of age, it is learnt.

        Cold wave death toll reaches 31

        LAHAN, Dec 20: With five fresh deaths, including those of the three elderly persons in Siraha, on Tuesday, cold wave death toll has reached 31 so far.

        Three persons, all of them above 50, reportedly died of extreme cold on Tuesday morning. They died because they had to sleep on cold floors without warm cloths on.
        Munda Sada, 50, of Lahan-1 and Shreechan Ram Chamar, 60, of Lahan-6, and Khatwi Devi Mahato, 55, of Lalpur-7 in Siraha, Lahan, succumbed to the cold.

        Previously, Daya Devi Mahato, of Asanpur-1 in Siraha, reportedly died of hypothermia resulting from extreme cold.

        On Tuesday morning, one more person was found dead in Tundikhel of Palpa district. Bijay Yadav, 36, of Shivanagar village-9 in Kapilvastu district, who was in Palpa for treatment at Tansen mission hospital, died of extreme cold as he spent the night under the open sky, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Govinda Thapaliya.

        According to Republica correspondent Suresh Yadav, in Mahottari district, where nine persons had died of extreme cold on Monday alone, Basu Sada, 63, a resident of Harinmari village in Mahottari, died of cold, taking the death toll by cold wave in the district to 15 over the last week.

        According to the police, four persons have died of extreme cold in Saptari district in the last two days. With this, cold wave death toll has reached eight in Siraha and Saptari by Tuesday, said the police.

        Earlier, a total of 22 persons, including 14 in Mahottari, had died of extreme cold over the last week in Dhanusha and Parsa districts.

          Cold wave continues to hit southern plains

          Saptari, Dec. 21,m The cold wave has claimed one more life in the district.

          A three-day old infant of Chotelal Yadav of Bishahariya-9 died due to shivering cold Tuesday.

          Cold wave continued to take a toll in the Terai with Saptari, Mahottari and Siraha districts already witnessing over two dozen deaths over the week.

            KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court today directed the government to furnish explanations as to what initiatives it has taken to provide relief to the people in Tarai, who have been on the receiving end of biting cold for the last two weeks.

            Meanwhile, the government today said cold wave has claimed 32 lives so far. The Ministry of Home Affairs said there were 12 deaths in Mahottari, seven in Rautahat, five in Dhanusha, three in Siraha, three in Rupandehi and one death each in Dolpa and Morang.




            One dies in Mahottari

            MAHOTTARI: Cold wave on Thursday claimed one more life in Mahottari, taking the death toll in the district to 22. According to District Public Health Office, two-year-old children to 75-year-old elderly have succumbed to biting cold in the last 15 days since the onset of winter. District Education Officer Nirmal Adhikari said schools in the district have been shut for three days after a fifth grader Lalu Ansari of Sukhdev Higher Secondary School and Sushil Lal Karna (60), a helper at Saraswati Higher Secondary School, died of cold.

                According to our correspondent, 65 year old unnamed man r of Bhanuchauk died. With it, the death toll in Dhanusa increased to 10 this season.

                In Kailali, shivering cold followed by the rains had affected the landless squatters and the freed Kamaiyas.

                Children of Kamaiyas were found suffering from cold-related ailments, said Ram Chaudhary, one of the freed Kamaiyas.

                  Nepalgunj, Jan 14, Four died of cold in Jajarkot Friday night following a continuous snowfall in the mountainous and Himalayan districts of the mid-western region.

                  According to regional police office, Ambar Singh, 82, Karna Oli, 77, and Jaya Bahadur Singh, 68, and Prithi Budha, 57, of Punma VDC died due to the shivering cold.
