Norovirus outbreaks reported in San Antonio

Submitted by Staff on Wed, 03/24/2010 - 10:29am.

At least two outbreaks of what appears to be the highly-contagious norovirus have been reported in San Antonio. Those infected have been connected to an assisted living facility and a private school. A spokesperson for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District would not specify the names and locations of these facilities, but said neither are in the Stone Oak area. Likewise, Metro Health has not confirmed any cases of norovirus this far north of downtown. <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

Still, the public is advised to increase the hand washing, which is the best way to prevent infection. The same group of viruses that often sicken cruise ship passengers, noroviruses are not life-threatening, but can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping for 24 to 48 hours.
