Parliamentarians lost their cool on Tuesday as Health Minister Horace Dalley outlined plans to combat the malaria outbreak.
    <o:p></o:p>
The number of confirmed cases has moved from four on Friday to 21.
    <o:p></o:p>
The heated exchange erupted minutes after Mr. Dalley in a statement to the House, appealed for the co-operation of Members of Parliament to contain the spread of the disease.
    <o:p></o:p>
But the MPs were not able to contain their anger.
    <o:p></o:p>
The bad news is that the number of confirmed cases continues to rise.
    <o:p></o:p>
The good news - no reported deaths associated with malaria.
    <o:p></o:p>
MPs became hot under the collar after being told, among other things that another 100 persons had turned up at health facilities with fever symptoms.
    <o:p></o:p>
The Minister said their conditions are being assessed.
    <o:p></o:p>
He announced that the Ministry's plan of action will take on added dimensions.
    <o:p></o:p>
The surveillance exercise now extends from ffice:smarttags" /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comAmong the programmes being undertaken is a case management of malaria.
    <o:p></o:p>
The Minister said presumptive treatment will be carried out on persons coming from malaria endemic areas and a review of the condition of Jamaican travellers who have visited countries plagued with malaria.
    <o:p></o:p>
Under the rules of Parliament, members are only allowed to ask questions or seek clarification in relation to a Ministerial statement.
    <o:p></o:p>
But the rules were relaxed Tuesday to give Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Ken Baugh latitude.
    <o:p></o:p>
However, other Opposition members led by Audley Shaw wanted similar treatment.
    <o:p></o:p>
Government members would have none of it.
    <o:p></o:p>
They took on the Opposition as South Central St. Catherine MP, Sharon Haye-Webster, got a rare opportunity in the hot seat, normally occupied by Speaker, Michael Peart.
    <o:p></o:p>
Things reached fever pitch soon after and insults, accusations, charges and counter charges flew across the floor.
    <o:p></o:p>
Central Clarendon MP Mike Henry appealed for calm.
    <o:p></o:p>
After Mr. Shaw was given the opportunity to ask questions, other Opposition members including West Central St. Andrew MP Andrew Holness, Central St. Catherine Member Olivia Babsy Grange and Leader of Opposition Business Derrick Smith joined the fray.
