PALO, Leyte ? Five people died of leptospirosis out of the 20 confirmed persons afflicted with the disease, the Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas said.

The regional epidemiology service and surveillance unit (Ressu) of the DOH said the number of persons affected with the water-borne disease, which is normally acquired from a rat?s urine, appeared to be increasing due to the flooding incident that hit the region in March.

The DOH has confirmed five deaths in April. The latest fatalities were a 57-year-old man from Palo, Leyte and a 32-year-old man from Marabut in Samar.

The victim from Palo was reported to have acquired the disease due to the flooding incident last month.

The victim from Marabut town was a farmer who was infected with urine from rats while wading towards his farm amid flood, personnel from the Ressu said...

        PIA Press Release
        Monday, July 18, 2011

Lepto cases on the rise after deadly flood
DAVAO CITY July 18 (PIA)--Cases of Leptospirosis is on the rise in the aftermath of the deadly June 28 flooding which hit several populated barangays in Davao City.

According to Edward Ladrido of the City Health Office Epidemiological Unit,

from a total number of 27 cases, with three dead for the period of January 1 to June 25 2011, the current number of admitted cases from June 26 to July 15 has already reached 24, with at least one death.

Ladrido said the CHO has given prophylaxis to places with high incidences of leptospirosis recorded, these included the barangays of Matina Balusong and Matina Pangi.

The floods could have spread the bacteria which causes Leptospirosis. He says the primary risk factor is exposure to flood waters.

The disease is transmitted by the urine of an infected mammal like rats and mice. They can be spread by flood water which carries off the bacteria from the animal?s urine.

Ladrido said that prevention is still the best option to fight the disease, he warned people not to wade in flood waters or to use protective materials like boots and plastic to cover their feet and legs.

Leptospirosis starts off with flu-like symptoms accompanied by muscle pains and coughs. At its worst it will affect the liver and brain. In some cases liver failure and meningitis will set in. (PIA/RG Alama)

...Meanwhile, 613 cases of leptospirosis were reported from January to July 9 this year, which is 73.2 percent higher than the 354 cases during the same period last year. There were 48 reported deaths.

Region VI (Western Visayas) accounted for 30.83 percent of the total, posting 189 cases. The Bicol Region (Region V) had 66 cases while Region III (Central Luzon) had 62 cases. The National Capital Region had 55 leptospirosis cases.

Majority of the cases reported were male, accounting for 88.1 percent of the total number, while approximately 39 percent belonged to the 25-39 age group.

The report stated, “Leptospirosis has low case fatality rate however it increases with advancing age and may reach 20 percent or more in patients with jaundice and kidney damage who have not been treated with renal dialysis.”

Ona said that efforts must be made to avoid contact with rat feces and urine because the treatment of serious cases is more expensive, entailing dialysis.

The number of dengue cases dropped by more than 13 percent nationwide during the first six months of the year but increased sharply in Metro Manila which registered 8,909 patients, or 178 percent more than a year ago, the health department said Friday.

DOH 6 says Leptospirosis cases in W. Visayas reach alarming level
              by TWVillavert

ILOILO CITY, August 23 (PIA) -- The Department of Health, Region 6 said that Leptospirosis cases in Western Visayas have reached an alarming level. During the January 1 to August 13, 2011 period, there were 29 deaths out of 290 cases reported.

Dr. Ma. Jocelyn Te, Emerging/Re-emerging Diseases Prevention and Control Regional Coordinator said that there were only 63 cases of leptospirosis reported during the same period last year. There were eight (8) deaths recorded.

According to Dr. Te, the breakdown of leptospirosis cases and the number of deaths per province were as follows: Iloilo, 158 cases, 13 deaths; Negros Occidental, 66 cases, 8 deaths; Capiz, 17 cases, 5 deaths; Bacolod City, 19 cases, one (1) death; Iloilo City, 17 cases, 2 deaths; Antique, 9 cases; and Guimaras, four (4) cases.

Dr. Te also reiterated DOH's call for people avoid wading in floodwaters.

?We emphasize that they should wear boots if wading cannot be avoided," Dr. Te said.

Leptospirosis is an infection caused by direct exposure to bacteria found in animal urine of infected animals especially rats. Patients can get infected when they swallow floodwater or when bacteria enter the body through open wounds, eyes, nose, or breaks in the skin.

Symptoms include fever; non-specific symptoms of muscle pain, headache, muscle pain and reddish eyes for some cases.

In extreme cases, the disease may cause renal failure, liver disease, and even death.

Antibiotics duly prescribed by a physician could help the affected patients, Dr Te said as she pointed out that early consultation /treatment is advised in order to prevent complications of leptospirosis.

For the province of Iloilo, the Provincial Administrator Raul Banias and Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ma. Socorro Colmenares-Qui?on said during the August 17 press conference at the Capitol that there was an increase in the occurrence of Leptospirosis in several towns of the province but it is not yet considered an outbreak.

Qui?on said the rise in Leptospirosis cases could be attributed to the rainy season and at the same time the resurgence of rat infestation in several farms in the province, the reason why most of those affected by Leptospirosis are farmers and mostly males.

The Iloilo Capitol press report disclosed that municipalities have their own supplies of Doxycycline, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, but the provincial government has also allotted an additional P150,000 for the purchase of the said drug.

Capitol also disclosed that representatives from the World Health Organization?s (WHO) Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response were in Iloilo to help monitor and address the rising Leptospirosis cases.(JCM/TWV/PIA6-Iloilo)

Leptospirosis is ?very? deadly ? DOH
                by Jell E. Guzman

QUEZON CITY, October 2 (PIA) -? The Department of Health reiterated that leptospirosis is ?very? deadly.

This, after most parts of Metro Manila was submerged with flood waters early this week caused by typhoon ?Pedring.?

In a release by the Department of Health, Center for Health Development-Metro Manila (CHD-MM) Regional Director Eduardo Janairo reported that cases of leptospirosis are fast rising as series of typhoons continue to bring flood waters in various areas of Metro Manila.

Janairo said the disease brought about by rats can be very deadly as it is transmitted through humans from contaminated waters, especially rat urine.

?Once it comes into contact with cuts and open wounds in the skin, a person may develop high-grade fever, muscle pain and nausea. If complications may arise, it can lead to renal failure, respiratory distress and eventually death,? said Janairo.

He asked the public to avoid wading, and most of all swimming in flood waters. If unavoidable, the DOH advises the public to wear proper protection like boots and gloves, and other protective gears.

The CHD-MM chief also advised hospitals to immediately treat patients with high fever and provide Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).

?There should be no deaths caused by leptospirosis because it is treatable and preventable,? Janairo stressed.

Meanwhile, Janairo advised those who have been exposed to flood waters to immediately seek medical help if they start not to feel well.

CHD?s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit records showed 391 cases of leptospirosis, with 31 deaths from January to September 8, 2011.

According to DOH, majority of the cases belonged to the age group from 15-30 years old, with 159 cases and five deaths.

Among the cities with the most number of recorded cases of leptospirosis are: Manila (79), Quezon City (76), Caloocan (3), Malabon (4), Navotas (27), Valenzuela (21), Para?aque (22), Pasay (19), Makati (12), Las Pi?as (10), and Taguig (10).

Recently, Marikina City Health officials distributed some medicines against leptospirosis to evacuees. Hundreds of residents flee their homes after Marikina River overflowed due to continuous heavy rains caused by ?Pedring.? (DOH/PIA-NCR/RJB/JEG)

Leptospirosis kills 18 in Negros Occ. in Jan - Nov 2011

                      by Lorenzo O. Lambatin Jr.
NEGROS OCC., November 23 (PIA) -- Eighteen people died of leptospirosis this year in Negros Occidental.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ernel Tumimbang, said leptospirosis cases from January to November in 2011 increased to 123 cases, compared to 20 cases during the same period last year, or an increase of 515 percent. Only three deaths were reported in 2010.
Of the reported cases, 38 persons were males aged 22-29 years old, while 26 were 30-39 years old.
Tumimbang explained that government physicians believe males working in rice and sugarcane fields are the ones mostly affected by the disease because parts of their body are exposed to water.
A person may become infected with leptospirosis when his open wound comes into contact with water contaminated by urine of infected mice.
The PHO advised farm workers to coordinate with their local agriculture office to bring down the rat population in farm areas.
Workers were also advised to maintain proper personal hygiene and to always maintain clean surroundings. (JCM/LOL-PIA6)
