The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 1,095 Lassa fever cases and 188 deaths across 113 local government areas in 28 states.

The NCDC revealed this in its Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 41 (October 9–15, 2023), released on Tuesday....

Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi lead death rate

Fifty health workers have been infected with Lassa fever according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) situation report for Week 41 (October 9 -15).

The country has also recorded 188 deaths and 1,095 confirmed cases of the 7,724 suspected cases across 28 states.

The current death toll puts the case-fatality ratio at 17.2 per cent, which is lower compared to the 18.9 per cent recorded in 2022 for the same 41-week period.

The number of suspected cases however increased when compared to that reported for the same period in 2022.

The agency, however, said it is conducting intensive response activities through a one-health approach in the affected areas....

Nine persons including a 13-year-old girl have died out of the 39 confirmed cases of Lasser Fever in Benue State.
The commissioner for health and human services, Dr Yanmar Ortese, who disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent yesterday in Makurdi said the state government was making arrangements for burial of the victims.

Chief medical director of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi (BSUTH), Dr. Stephen Hwande who also confirmed the outbreak during an interaction with newsmen said the confirmed cases were among the 10 suspected persons that were referred to the hospital from the Federal University of Health Science, Otukpo, Nigerian Airforce Hospital, Federal Medical Centre Makurdi and some private hospitals...

NCDC records surge in Lassa fever cases in 2023

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a significant surge in Lassa Fever cases during week 51 of 2023.

This information was released on the official NCDC website on Sunday. During the week, the newly confirmed Lassa Fever cases spiked from 10 in week 50 to 26 cases. These cases were identified in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, and Plateau States.

Highlights

• In week 51, the number of new confirmed cases increased from 10 in epi week 50,
2023 to 26 cases. These were reported in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, and Plateau States
(Table 3)
• Cumulatively from week 1 to week 51, 2023, 215 deaths have been reported with a case
fatality rate (CFR) of 17.5% which is lower than the CFR for the same period in 2022
(17.9%)
• In total for 2023, 28 States have recorded at least one confirmed case across 121 Local
Government Areas (Figures 2 and 3)
• Seventy-seven (77%) of all confirmed Lassa fever cases were reported from these three
states (Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi) while 23% were reported from 25 states with confirmed
Lassa fever cases. Of the 77% confirmed cases, Ondo reported 35%, Edo 28%, and
Bauchi 14%
• The predominant age group affected is 21-30 years (Range: 1 to 93 years, Median Age:
32 years). The male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.9 (Figure 4)
• The number of suspected cases increased compared to that reported for the same
period in 2022.
• Two new Healthcare workers were affected in the reporting week 51.
