Lassa Fever: Katsina Records Six Suspected Cases, One Confirmed Death

The Katsina State Government on Monday said it is taking proactive measures to reduce mortality rate and manage the spread of Lassa fever and other epidemic-prone diseases, including cerebrospinal meningitis, diphtheria, mpox, measles, and cholera in the state.

This follows the widespread outbreak of Lassa fever in parts of the country, which mostly affects healthcare workers..

Lassa fever kills 99, cases near 2,000

No fewer than 99 Nigerians have died as a result of Lassa fever in the first eight weeks of 2026, according to official data obtained from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Deaths recorded so far in the first eight weeks of 2026 surpass the number of deaths reported during the same period in 2025.

Already, figures of suspected cases stand at 1,989 across 67 local government areas in 18 states of the federation.

According to the NCDC, 84 per cent of all confirmed Lassa fever cases were reported from five states: Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, and Benue.

The NCDC also noted that 10 more health workers were affected in the first eight weeks of 2026, bringing the total number of health workers affected by the disease to 28, a higher figure than was reported in 2025...

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention(NCDC) says six healthcare workers were infected with Lassa fever in one week, raising fresh concerns about occupational exposure among frontline health personnel.

The NCDC disclosed this on Monday in its Lassa Fever Situation Report for Epidemiological Week 9, covering Feb. 23 to March 1.

According to the report, the infections occurred as the country continues to battle the viral haemorrhagic disease across several states.

The agency said that cumulatively, 37 healthcare workers had been infected with Lassa fever in 2026.

It said Nigeria recorded 65 confirmed cases of Lassa fever in the week, a slight decline from the 77 reported the previous week.

The report noted that the confirmed cases were recorded in Benue, Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, Plateau and Nasarawa states.

The public health agency also said that 460 suspected cases were reported during the week under review, with nine deaths recorded among confirmed cases, representing a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 13.9 per cent.

Cumulatively, the NCDC said Nigeria has recorded 2,446 suspected cases and 469 confirmed cases of Lassa fever in 2026, with 109 deaths reported so far.

It added that the overall case fatality rate stands at 23.2 per cent, which is higher than the 18.7 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

Lassa fever: 25 doctors infected

Health workers across the country are facing increasing risks as the Lassa fever outbreak continues to spread, with infections and deaths recorded among frontline medical personnel.

While the National Association of Resident Doctors said 25 of its members have been infected, with one dead, the Nigerian Medical Association confirmed that no fewer than 37 health workers have been affected, including three doctors who have died.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness endemic to West Africa, caused by the Lassa virus and transmitted primarily through contact with infected Mastomys rats’ urine or faeces, or directly between humans. Symptoms range from mild malaise to severe bleeding, facial swelling, and shock.

Data obtained from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday showed that 146 deaths have been recorded from 582 confirmed cases, with 3,222 suspected cases reported across the country within 11 weeks...

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said that Lassa fever infections in 2026 remain heavily concentrated in a small number of states, even as weekly cases show signs of decline.

In its latest situation report covering Epidemiological Week 10 (2-8 March 2026), the agency disclosed that five states – Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo – account for 85 per cent of all confirmed cases recorded so far this year.

Bauchi alone accounted for 28 per cent of infections, followed by Ondo (21 per cent), Taraba (19 per cent), Benue (nine per cent) and, Edo (eight per cent).

The remaining 15 per cent of cases were spread across 15 other states.

In total, 20 states and 78 local government areas have reported at least one confirmed case so far in 2026.

During Week 10 alone, cases were recorded in eight states: Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Edo, Kogi, Gombe, and Cross River.

The report also highlights that Lassa fever continues to disproportionately affect young adults, with the 21–30 age group accounting for the highest number of confirmed cases...

Tragedy as Lassa Fever Kills 31 in Ondo, Infects Dozens of Health Workers

Ondo State has emerged as one of the worst-hit areas in the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak, recording 31 deaths within the first 11 weeks of 2026, according to data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state ranks second in fatalities, behind Taraba State, which reported 40 deaths, highlighting the growing public health concern in Ondo and other parts of the country where the disease remains endemic.

Across Nigeria, the outbreak has continued to take a toll on both the general population and frontline health workers.

A total of 146 deaths have been recorded from 582 confirmed cases, while 3,222 suspected cases were reported within the same period.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has revealed that 311 people tested positive for Lassa fever in Bauchi State between October 1, 2025 and March 23, 2026, with 68 deaths recorded.

MSF said it has been working closely with the Federal Ministry of Health in Bauchi since 2022, providing free treatment at the Lassa Fever Treatment Centre. The services include laboratory diagnosis, antiviral medication and mental health support for patients.

MSF teams are also actively engaged in communities in Bauchi, Kirfi, Toro, and Tafawa Balewa local government areas. Their efforts focus on early detection of suspected cases, prompt isolation, and safe referral of patients...

Lassa fever claims 50 lives in Taraba

Lassa fever has claimed 50 lives at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo, Taraba State, between November 2025 and March 2026.

The FMC’s Head of Clinical Service, Dr. Abubakar Kirim, on Thursday said Taraba has recorded the highest number of cases this year.

Among the challenges faced are a lack of awareness about prevention measures, an acute shortage of medical doctors, and rising cases due to the locals’ exposure to the disease’s carriers, like rodents, particularly mice.

As of the time of filing this report, 226 suspected cases have been admitted, 95 lab-confirmed, while the death toll stands at 50...

Lassa fever kills two in Katsina
