The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has identified Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo states as the epicentres of the Lassa fever outbreak in the country.

Briefing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, said that the states accounting for over 70 per cent of confirmed cases reported so far in 2025.

Lassa fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted primarily through contact with the urine or faeces of infected rats.

Symptoms include fever, sore throat, headache, vomiting, muscle pain, and in severe cases, bleeding from body openings.

Mr Idris said that the three states contributed 71 per cent of the 660 confirmed Lassa fever cases recorded between January and the end of March 2025, with Ondo accounting for 30 per cent, Bauchi 25 per cent, and Edo 16 per cent...

The revelation came on Friday through Salisu Inuwa, spokesperson for the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Unit, during an interview with a local newspaper.

Inuwa said two suspected cases were reported at the hospital last week, with one later confirmed after laboratory testing.

“Last week, we had two suspected cases of Lassa fever. One of them, unfortunately, passed away before we could collect a sample for testing. The second patient came in walking and tested positive for Lassa fever,” Inuwa said...

Nigeria Lassa Fever Toll Escalates As NCDC Reports 822 Cases, 155 Deaths

CFR Hits 18.9 percent, Ondo, Edo Bear Brunt of Outbreak

Nigeria’s Lassa Fever toll has soared, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 822 confirmed cases and 155 deaths, signalling a deepening national health crisis.

NCDC on Tuesday, confirmed 11 additional cases of Lassa Fever in Week 29 (14–20 July 2025), all reported in Ondo and Edo States.

This latest surge brings the national total to 822 confirmed cases and a grim tally of 155 deaths so far in 2025. The announcement underlines a deteriorating situation that demands urgent, coordinated interventions at every level of government and healthcare delivery.

NCDC’s Situation Report reveals a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.9 percent – an increase from the 17.1 percent recorded at the same point in 2024. This uptick is especially troubling given that the number of new confirmed infections remained steady compared with Epidemiological Week 28, suggesting that the deadliness of Lassa Fever may be intensifying rather than the incidence alone driving mortality...

The agency reported that the new infections, from Bauchi, Ondo, Edo, and Taraba states, brought the cumulative number of confirmed cases in 2025 to 1,069, with eight deaths recorded during the period.

In its Lassa Fever Situation Report covering December 1 to 7, 2025, the NCDC said the eight deaths translated to a CFR of 24.2 per cent for the week. It added that a total of 9,041 suspected cases and seven probable cases had been reported nationwide this year, with cumulative deaths rising to 195, resulting in an overall CFR of 18.2 per cent, higher than the 16.5 per cent recorded during the same period in 2024.

The agency reported that 21 states and 103 local councils have recorded at least one confirmed Lassa fever case this year. It stated that four states, including Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Taraba, accounted for 89 per cent of all confirmed infections, with Ondo recording the highest number of incidents, followed by Bauchi, Edo, and Taraba.

According to the report, young adults, aged 21 to 30 years, were the most affected, although infections were recorded across all age groups, ranging from one to 96 years...

                                January 7, 2026

THE Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says 1,119 confirmed cases of Lassa fever have been recorded in 2025, with young adults emerging as the most affected age group nationwide.

The agency disclosed this in its Lassa Fever Situation Report for Epidemiological Week 51, covering Dec. 15 to 21, 2025, providing a comprehensive overview of cases, deaths, and affected states across the country.

According to the report, people aged 21 to 30 years accounted for the highest burden of confirmed infections, with the median age among patients recorded at 30 years nationwide.

The NCDC noted that males were slightly more affected than females, reflecting gender differences in exposure or health-seeking behaviour in communities with high Lassa fever transmission risk.

So far, 206 deaths have been recorded among confirmed cases, representing a case fatality rate of 18.4 per cent, higher than the 16.4 per cent reported during the same period in 2024.

During Week 51 alone, 21 new confirmed cases and five deaths were reported, down from 28 confirmed cases in the previous week, indicating a modest week-on-week decline in new infections...
