SINGAPORE: The world's first Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) detection kit has been developed by a Singaporean and will be available in about nine months' time.

Designed and created by Singapore Polytechnic (SP) lecturer Tan Eng Lee, the HFMD detection kit is able to detect all HFMD-causing enteroviruses in two hours.

In particular, the kit is able to simultaneously differentiate the more fatal Enterovirus 71 (EV71) strain.

There have been more than 28,000 HFMD cases in Singapore so far this year - about double the number seen in the same period last year...
