Questioned by the Health Surveillance Agency (Rospotrebnadzor), salads sold by a company delivering home-cooked meals were withdrawn from sale.

“At present, 55 people are in serious condition, including 30 in intensive care” out of a total of 121 poisoned individuals “presenting symptoms of poisoning and suspected botulism,” said Anastassia Rakova, the deputy of the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin.

“The lives of these patients are not threatened,” she said, quoted by Russian news agencies.

Foodborne botulism is “a serious and potentially fatal, but rare disease”, which “blocks nerve functions and can lead to respiratory and muscular paralysis”, explains the World Health Organization (WHO) on its website.

This poisoning is caused by the ingestion of botulinum toxins, present in contaminated food.

Ms. Rakova indicated that "the city of Moscow and the regional Ministry of Health have identified the main products likely to be the cause of food poisoning."

“An epidemiological investigation is underway and the distribution of poor quality products has been suspended,” she added.

The home-cooked meal delivery company, which sells the salads in question, indicated in a press release that it had “already withdrawn the dish from sale and started to check the entire supply and production chain” .

“We have also temporarily stopped the application [mobile, Editor’s note] to check all products, even those that do not pose a problem,” she said.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, only 82 cases of botulism were confirmed in the European Economic Area (EEA) in 2021, the latest year for which data has been published.

Plus de 120 personnes ont dû consulter les services médicaux à Moscou ces derniers jours, dont 30 sont toujours en soins intensifs, après de graves intoxications alimentaires avec suspicion de botulisme, ont annoncé lundi les autorités municipales.

Separately, the sanitary authorities of the cities of Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod located on the Volga River reported 12 cases of botulism each.

Infected people from all three cities ordered specific food -- lobio and salad with tuna, beans and apple -- from two local enterprices, Local Kitchen and GastroPort, Rospotrebnadzor said, noting that a decision was made to suspend the operation of these companies until the end of the inspection which is underway.

June 18 (Reuters) - Russian investigators have arrested and charged three people after more than 120 people in Moscow and dozens in other cities fell sick with food poisoning that authorities said was caused by botulism in a vacuum-packed bean salad.

The Rospotrebnadzor consumer safety watchdog said more than 172 metric tons of dangerous products had been removed from circulation after botulism cases were registered in Moscow, its surrounding region, and the regions of Nizhny Novgorod and Tatarstan.
