Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC): Update on outbreak in the EU (6 July 2011, 11:00)

    Update since 5 July (11:00):

In the EU/EEA, 898 HUS cases, including 33 deaths, and 3 338 non-HUS cases, including 17 deaths, have so far been reported.

The table below shows the distribution of reported cases per country.

Since the last update, Germany reports one additional HUS case and 24 additional non-HUS STEC cases.

Four HUS cases and 10 non-HUS STEC cases fell ill within the last 10 days (26 June ? 5 July).

The last known date of illness onset in a patient with confirmed STEC O104 was 26 June 2011.

The last reported date of illness onset among all cases (also without O104 confirmation) was 29 June 2011.

There is no update regarding the outbreak in France (Bordeaux Region).

EFSA has now published its report on the trace-back investigation of seeds implicated in the German and French outbreaks (see link below).

Table 1: Number of probable and confirmed HUS cases and non-HUS STEC cases with associated deaths per EU/EEA Member State as of 6 July, 11:00

Note: the numbers in this table represent the total number of cases reported at the European level (ECDC) so far. Although daily numbers of reported cases have steadily decreased in the last weeks, these cumulative numbers continue to rise due to reporting delays at the various levels.

    * Cases reported from the new outbreak in Bordeaux
** Cases reported earlier, linked to travel to Germany
