Kailali on high alert after spread of Japanese Encephalitis

Health authorities in Kailali have declared a high alert to prevent the further spread of Japanese Encephalitis following two recent deaths from the disease.

A 9-year-old boy from ward 5 of Ghodaghodi Municipality and a 60-year-old man from ward 6 of the same municipality succumbed to the illness earlier this week. Additionally, four more cases have been confirmed in Gauriganga Municipality, Godavari Municipality, and Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City, according to the Sudurpaschim Health Directorate...

Nepali health officials have reported at least six deaths and 36 infections from the deadly Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus since the start of the monsoon season this year.

According to the Immunisation Section at the Family Welfare Division of the Department of Health Services, several districts, including Kailali, have reported both deaths and infections from the deadly virus.

“Six deaths and 36 cases of infection have been reported so far this year from various districts,” said Dr Abhiyan Gautam, chief of the section. “Last year, there were five deaths and 107 cases of Japanese encephalitis infections.”...

Minor diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis in Banke

NEPALGUNJ, Sept 10: Narainapur Rural Municipality of Banke district has recorded a patient of Japanese encephalitis. A nine-year-old girl was diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis, Bheri Hospital said.

Pediatrician Dr Pratima Khadka said the girl suffering from Japanese encephalitis was receiving treatment at the ICU and she had a normal health condition at present.

9 people die from Japanese Encephalitis in this season

KATHMANDU, Sept 12: The number of deaths from Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has reached nine since the start of this year’s monsoon season. According to the Family Welfare Division (FWD) under the Department of Health Services, there have been 53 reported cases of Japanese Encephalitis since July 30.

This year has seen an increase in deaths compared to last year, which recorded six fatalities. Dr. Abhiyan Gautam, chief of Child Health and Immunization Services, reported that deaths have occurred in the following districts: three in Kailali, two in Sunsari, and one each in Sarlahi, Palpa, Chitwan, and Kapilvastu.

"The rate of infection of Japanese Encephalitis is high during the months of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) and Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September). There has been an outbreak in the Terai region," Dr Gautam said. "The mortality rate from JE is also high. We have already begun efforts for prevention."...

Deaths from Japanese encephalitis doubles compared to last year

KATHMANDU, Sept 14: The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) has reported that five more people have died of Japanese encephalitis in the country. With these additional deaths, the total number of fatalities due to the disease has reached 14.

As of Wednesday, the number of deaths was nine. The deceased include three from Kailali, two from Sunsari, two from Siraha, one from Sarlahi, and one each from Jhapa, Palpa, Chitwan, Kapilvastu, and Sindhuli.

This year, Japanese encephalitis has been confirmed in a total of 61 people, with 14 deaths. Last year, there were 107 infections and only seven deaths. The data indicates that this year’s death toll has doubled compared to last year...
