Health personnel in Kibaale district are puzzled by a strange disease which has invaded the district leaving 12 people dead and others on deathbeds. The name and cause of the disease is not yet known.

Information coming in from the District Health Officer indicates that 11 people from one family in Nyamarunda Sub County have died since the strange disease surfaced in the district.

However, what has worried the health workers more is that the disease has started killing their own. Yesterday a Clinical Officer at Kagadi health sub-district, Muhumuza Clare was buried after dying from that strange disease.

There is also information that the driver of the vehicle which transported some of the dead people from home to the hospital is also seriously ill.

According to the District Health Officer, Dr. Dan Kyamanwa, the signs of the disease include; high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and systems failure. It kills patients within 4 days to a week.

A disease with those symptoms that kills 11 people in one family and a HCW has to raise the possibility of a viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) outbreak.

Only one person worldwide has contracted Ebola since January 1, 2009:

I fear the world's lucky streak there may have come to an end.

It is probably too early too speculate on which ebolavirus would be the most likely if this indeed is due to Ebola. I can't think of anything in the original post that would make one strain more likely than another. Likewise, I don't see any reason why Ebola virus would be more likely than Marburg either.

If previous VHF outbreaks are any clue, results of testing for Ebola or Marburg should be available in the next day or two. I will admit it is slightly odd to get this report from the UGPulse and still nothing from the Daily Monitor.

Information coming in from the District Health Officer indicates that 11 people from one family in Nyamarunda Sub County have died since the strange disease surfaced in the district. However, what has worried the health workers more is that the disease has started killing their own. Yesterday a Clinical Officer at Kagadi health sub-district was buried after dying from that strange disease. It's said that the Clinical Officer was the one who treated some of the 11 people from Nyamarunda Sub County and is suspected to have contracted the disease from them. There is also information that the driver of the vehicle which transported some of the dead people from home to the hospital is also seriously ill.

According to the District Health Officer, Dr. Dan Kyamanwa, the signs of the disease include: high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and systems failure. It kills patients within 4 days to a week. The Minister of State for Planning, Matia Kasaija, while speaking during the burial of the Clinical Officer, promised that government will send a team of experts to investigate the cause of the strange disease.

[The undiagnosed disease is characterised by high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and systems failure. It kills patients within 4 days to a week, and appears to be easily transmissible to carers. Haemorrhage is not mentioned as a significant feature which excludes some filovirus haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola and Marburg. However, the signs and symptoms are compatible with an outbreak of Bundibugyo haemorrhagic fever, a filovirus haemorrhagic fever 1st identified in the Bundibugyo district of Western Uganda. Bundibugyo District is located in western Uganda, which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo. After reports of a mysterious illness in Bundibugyo District, the presence of a novel 5th filovirus species, Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BEBOV), was identified in diagnostic samples submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in November 2007.

According to McNeil et al., in Emerging Infectious Diseases, Volume 16, Number 12, December 2010
(http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/16/...27_article.htm) the onset of this filovirus haemorrhagic fever is associated with nonspecific signs and symptoms, including fever, myalgias, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; at later stages of disease, overt hemorrhage has been reported in about 45 percent of cases. In the outbreak of Bundibugyo filovirus haemorrhagic fever the proportion of deaths among those infected was lower (about 40 percent). In the original Bundibugyo outbreak the signs and symptoms included headache, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, conjunctivitis, skin rash, muscle pain, fatigue, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, hiccups, bleeding, unexplained death, or contact with a patient with suspected Ebola haemorrhagic fever.

Kibaale District is a district in Western Uganda. Like most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its principal town, in this case Kibaale, where the district headquarters are located. This map shows that Kibaale and Bundibigyo are adjacent districts in the Western Region of Uganda.

A strange disease has hit Kibaale district and has killed an entire family in Nyanswiga Village ,Nyamarunda Sub county.
The victims suffered form diarrhea,vomiting ,stomach ache and at the time of their death ,blood oozed from the nose and mouth.
The diseased have been identified as Yotus Isoke 64,who was the head of the home,Byaruhanga Isoke ,Fred Isoke ,Doreen Nantongo ,and Rogers Byaruhanga. Others were Tumumanye Kisembo Kusiima Byaruhanga ,Win Mbavazi and other two young ones.
The clinical officer at Kagadi Hospital ,Claire Muhumuza also died of the same symptoms after attending to some of the deceased.
The District Health officer ,Dan Kyamanywa says that a team from the Ministry of Health has been sent to investigate more about the disease.

The Ministry of Health is investigating a strange and contagious disease that has broken out in Nyamarunda sub-county in Kibaale district.
The Director General of Health Services Dr. D.K.W Lwamafa says surveillance reports from the investigations undertaken by the Ministry of Health, the district and international partners indicate that 21 people have been affected with 13 deaths since June 21.
The cases have been reported largely from one family in Nyansigwa village in Nyamarunda parish.
?Preliminary investigations show that it is a highly contagious disease that is transmitted from one person to another and can easily cause death,? says Lwamafa.

A disease which is yet to be identified has claimed a family of 12 in Nyaswiga Village, Nyamarunda Sub-county in Kibaale District in a span of three weeks.
The District Health Officer, Mr Dan Kyamanywa, confirmed the deaths were caused by a strange disease and said the Virus Research Institute and the Central Public Health Laboratory was in the district to investigate the disease.

“For now we are calling the disease vomiting and diarrhea, in the next couple of days we shall know what the disease is and the cause,” Dr Kyamanywa said.

Symptoms
He added that the disease is characterised by fever, diarrhea and vomiting but said there is no need for panic as the situation is under control.
It is reported that blood also oozed from the nose and mouth of the victims before they died.

Sixteen people are reported dead in Uganda from a mystery illness.
The Uganda publication UG Pulse reports that a strange illness, cause unknown, is spreading in the Kibaale district in western Uganda. The District Health Officer, Dr. Dan Kyamanwa, stated that 11 of the deaths were from the same family in the Nyamarunda Sub County. A twelfth death was a health officer. There are also reports of the illness appearing in the clinical officer who treated the family from Nyamarunda and a driver who transported the deceased.
Kyamanwa says that symptoms of the illness include high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and systems failure. Death occurs within four to seven days.
According to moderators at ProMED, this undiagnosed disease shares some similarities with Bundibugyo hemorrhagic fever, which was first identified in western Uganda in 2007.
The Ugandan government is reportedly sending a team of experts to investigate the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health has Saturday confirmed that the strange and contagious disease that broke out in Nyamarunda sub-county in Kibaale district late last month is Ebola.


The Director General of Health Services Dr. D.K.W Lwamafa told press at the Ministry?s headquarters in Kampala that after through tests of samples from patients, the ministry confirmed the outbreak of Ebola.

Lwamafa further said this type of Ebola had originated from Sudan.

He appealed to Ugandans to remain vigilant to avoid contracting the disease.

Early this week, the Health Ministry reported that surveillance reports from the investigations undertaken by its experts, Kibaale district and international partners had indicated that 21 people were affected with 13 deaths since June 21.

The cases were reported largely from one family in Nyansigwa village in Nyamarunda parish.

?Preliminary investigations show that it is a highly contagious disease that is transmitted from one person to another and can easily cause death,? Lwamafa said then.

Speaking to journalists today, Lwamafa said samples obtained from the cases and laboratory testing carried out in the Central Public Health Laboratory and at the Uganda Virus Research Institute confirmed Ebola.

?The general public is hereby cautioned to avoid public gatherings especially in the affected district and sick people are advised to promptly seek for medical care at the nearest health facility,? said Lwamafa.

He also noted the Ministry of Health team; working with partners is already on the ground to support the district to manage the Ebola outbreak.

He added burial of suspicious community deaths should be done under close supervision of district health workers and all suspicious deaths should be reported to the health workers.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal.
