    About 30 children have died, in Imo State, following a fresh outbreak of diarrhoea. The incident occurred in rural areas where the residents source their drinking water from streams and uncertified boreholes.

    The Commissioner for Health, Women Affairs and Social Development, Barr. Ngozi Njoku, made disclosure, on Thursday, when a delegation from Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited donated food, beds, gift items and clothing materials to the state government for the poor and physically-challenged.

    She said that the death toll from the latest outbreak had risen to 30 in the last few weeks, while hundreds of children suspected to have contracted disease had been admitted in many hospitals.

    According to her, 65 suspected cases had been reported in Ikeduru council area alone while areas such as Orlu, Owerri West, Ohaji Egbema Owerri North, Ngor Okpala local government areas had also been affected.

    The executive secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Primary Health Care Development Board, Rilwanu Muhammad, said unknown disease suspected to be typhoid fever or shigella dysentery had killed 13 people in Saburi community of AMAC in Abuja.
    Mr. Muhammad told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that the disease broke out on February 18.

    Update: 13 people die of food poisoning in Abuja
    Dr Rilwanu Muhammad, the Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, has said that 13 people died while 10 people survived food poisoning caused by clostridium perfringes in Abuja.

    Muhammad in Abuja on Friday said that the disease broke out on Feb. 18 in Saburi community, Gwagwa ward of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

    He said clostridium perfringes, is a bacterium which occurs in the soil, contaminates food and the intestinal track of human beings.
