Case of hemorrhagic dengue in Paraguay confirms epidemic alert
Asunción, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) Paraguay today registered a case of dengue hemorrhagic fever that confirmed the beginning of an epidemic of the disease with the presence of this lethal serotype, predicted days ago by local experts, Unicanal television reported.

The virus was detected in a minor from the central department of San Pedro de Ycuamandiyú, whose symptoms coincide with those of the DEN-3 serotype (called “severe”, “hemorrhagic” or “visceral”), which is considered the worst of the arboviral disease ( transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes), the source added.

Health authorities in that region confirmed the origin in the country of an epidemic characterized by the more benign traditional variants of the disease (DEN-1 and DEN-2), which have accumulated 129 confirmed cases so far.

The child in whom hemorrhagic dengue was detected was admitted to the San Pedro de Ycuamandiyú Regional Hospital, among hundreds of patients with symptomatic symptoms who arrive at that health facility every day, added medical sources cited by the aforementioned open television channel. .

Authorities from the Ministry of Health launched on Monday an emerging multi-sector integrated prevention and control campaign against dengue to face the expected epidemic of that disease, also predicted by local researchers.

During the last three weeks, Paraguay registered 1,359 dengue notifications (167 confirmed cases and 1,192 suspects), 15 of them hospitalized, while the newspaper HOY warned in its Sunday edition about “another large-scale dengue epidemic,” after the events that occurred. in 2006, 2013 and 2019.

The publication recalled that this is a hyperendemic country for this disease, which affects its population with large outbreaks every two to three years, and cited the recent warning of the Ministry of Health about “an explosion of great magnitude”, already marked this year by about eight thousand 700 cases.

Dengue in Paraguay accumulates 19 deaths and 10 thousand patients
      November 24, 2023
      CST15:27 (GMT) -0500

Asunción, Nov 24 (Prensa Latina) Paraguay has accumulated 10,000 dengue cases so far this year, while mosquito breeding sites are progressing and there is a high larval infestation, the Government warned today.

51 percent of these infections, reported until November 17, are concentrated in the northwestern department of Boquerón, along with the southwestern departments of Central and Asunción, although all regions report infections, added the director of Health Surveillance, Dr. Águeda. Hair, according to the newspaper Última Hora.

The infections of the arboviral disease (transmitted by mosquitoes) -explained the expert- increase due to the arrival of the autumn rains, enhanced by storm systems of the time and high temperatures, factors that favor arthropod breeding sites, along with inaction Against them.

“People do nothing to eliminate them. "They know what they have to do, but they don't do it because they lack a perception of risk regarding the breeding sites," considered the Ministry of Health official.

Another possible reason for this negligence on the part of the population, according to the researcher, is that the population is unaware of the danger that mosquito breeding sites represent for their health.

Cabello recalled that the Chamber of Deputies approved during its session on Wednesday a state of health emergency for 90 days throughout the national territory due to the proliferation of dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

The current stage of dengue contagion in Paraguay, which doctors describe as prior to an epidemic, affected 628 people in three weeks, most of them children up to 14 years old, according to another Government report.

The serotypes in circulation in the country are DEN-1 and DEN-2, the most common, but although it has yet to be confirmed, DEN-3 (severe, hemorrhagic or visceral) could be present, which, if it affects the country, would cause a serious epidemic, warned the Ministry of Public Health.

The presence of the hemorrhagic virus, already confirmed in other nations in the region, would be particularly harmful due to the vulnerability of the population to this endemic disease in the Guaraní nation and in others in America, the report stated.

The last three weeks indicate an accelerated increase in consultations for febrile cases throughout the country, among whom children under 15 years of age are most susceptible.

This age group - the specialist stressed - is this year a more susceptible and vulnerable population to a possible dengue epidemic, since before we always had outbreaks among adults over 25, 30 years old, and now there are more cases among people between five and 15 years.

“And that worries us because it means that since these viruses have already circulated for several consecutive years, they no longer find, let's say, the adult population susceptible and it hits children more, which is the essentially susceptible population,” explained Dr. Cabello.

According to the scholar, this indicates that the country “is already entering what would be the epidemic period, but without yet constituting an epidemic. We are talking about cases increasing and dispersion because we have dengue in all regions of the country.”

The highest proportion of cases, 64%, come from Central, Caaguazú, Itapúa and Asunción. All regions of the country have cases of the disease. We insist on the prevention and elimination of breeding sites. Timely consultation for symptoms is key to preventing complications. Vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and bleeding, warning signs that require urgent medical attention.

Likewise, in the department of San Pedro, in San Pedro del Ycuamandyju (B° San Rafael, Fátima, Santa Ana and San Miguel).

In addition, clusters of cases have been observed in Asunción, in the Tacumbú and Carlos Antonio López neighborhoods.

The dengue serotypes circulating in the national territory are DENV-1 and DENV-2. Regarding the volume of samples processed, there is a predominance of DENV-2 (58%).

Accumulated data show that, in the country, dengue cases amount to 10,925 so far this year.

Regarding the death curve, so far this year there have been 24 deaths from dengue and 337 from chikungunya.

        Chikungunya

Regarding chikungunya, in the last three weeks 9 cases were identified: 3 in Guairá (Villarrica, Tuyutimi and Mbocayaty), 2 cases in Central (Fernando de la Mora and Mariano Roque Alonso), 2 in Cordillera (San Bernardino and Piribebuy) , one case in Caaguazú (Coronel Oviedo) and one case in Itapúa (Cambyretpa).

        Pay attention to warning signs

If you experience fever or any of these warning signs: vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and bleeding, go immediately to the nearest health service to prevent the condition from becoming more complicated. It is equally important to avoid self-medication.

        Let's avoid hatcheries

It is important to periodically control and destroy mosquito breeding sites in the home, work, educational and recreational environment to combat dengue and other arboviruses.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, the use of repellent is indicated from 2 months of age. For children, the concentration of DEET should be less than 30%. The use of mosquito nets is also recommended in all age groups, mainly in cribs, strollers and beds.
