Locally transmitted cases of Dengue in Italy rise to 10

There are 10 confirmed cases of Dengue transmitted locally in Italy and notified on 4 September 2023. These cases refer to three unrelated episodes of transmission in the province of Lodi (7 confirmed cases), in the province of Rome (1 case) and in the province of Latina (2 cases). All cases have recovered or are improving. From the beginning of the year to 6 September, 122 cases of Dengue diagnosed in Italy but contracted in other countries were also reported. The situation described is in line with what was expected this season, considering the increase in international travel after the COVID-19 emergency and the climatic conditions favorable to the proliferation of Aedes albopictus mosquitoes (so-called tiger mosquitoes) which can transmit the Dengue virus. In all cases, disinfestation measures against mosquitoes were implemented and, in the areas where local transmission occurred, all the preventive measures required to protect transplants and transfusions were activated. In 2023, in addition to Italy, outbreaks of autochthonous Dengue were reported in France. In past years, outbreaks of this type have been confirmed in several European countries including Croatia, France, Spain and Italy.

Increase in Dengue cases in Italy in 2023

There have been 165 cases recorded since the beginning of the year to date

The Istituto Superiore di Sanità has reported an increase in Dengue cases in Italy during the year. So far, 165 cases have been reported, of which 19 are of indigenous origin. The other cases (146) were imported from other countries.
Native cases and prevention measures

The indigenous cases of Dengue occurred in three separate episodes, in the province of Lodi (14 confirmed cases), in the province of Latina (2 cases) and in the province of Rome (3 cases). The transmission of the Dengue virus is favored by climatic conditions that allow the proliferation of the vector, the Aedes albopictus mosquito, known as the tiger mosquito, which is now widespread in much of Europe.
