Dengue cases on the rise, Jamaicans urged to be vigilant

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is advising Jamaicans to remain vigilant in the wake of an increase in dengue cases.

It says there is a 13% increase in cases of the mosquito-borne disease since the start of the year.

The figure, it notes, is above those reported in the 2021 and 2022 epidemiological years.

While the increase in dengue activity is observed, Jamaica is not currently experiencing an outbreak, the health ministry notes.

At the same time, the Ministry says that it has identified, with support from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), nine cases of Type 2 dengue virus in four parishes — Kingston and St Andrew; St Thomas; St Catherine and Westmoreland.

The health ministry notes that the presence of the Type 2 virus, cases of which have not been seen in the population since 2010, heightens the island's risk for a possible outbreak...

Health ministry declares dengue outbreak

The Ministry of Health has declared that there is currently an outbreak of dengue fever in Jamaica.

The declaration came as the ministry's National Surveillance Unit advised that Jamaica has surpassed the dengue epidemic threshold for July and August and is on a trajectory to do the same for the month of September...

... As of Friday, the country had recorded 565 suspected, presumed and confirmed cases of dengue, it said.

Of that number, 78 cases had been confirmed with majority of the cases seen in Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine and St Thomas.

The ministry said the dominant strain is Dengue Type 2, which last predominated in 2010...

Jamaica records dengue-related death, increase in cases

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is reporting that tests have confirmed a dengue-related death, while three other persons are suspected to have died due to the virus.

The Ministry says the four cases were among a total of six infections that were under investigation...

Hanover sees big jump in suspected and confirmed dengue cases

LUCEA, Hanover — The Hanover Health Department is leaving no stone unturned as the parish grapples with a significant increase in suspected and confirmed dengue cases.

For September the parish recorded 24 suspected cases of which eight are confirmed. This is a drastic increase in comparison to the previous month when the parish recorded two suspected cases and no confirmed cases.

Acting Chief Public Health Inspector Fritz Francis said workers have been deployed across the parish to address the issue...

Almost 700 confirmed dengue cases in Jamaica

The country continues to see a steady increase in the number of cases of dengue fever.

As at November 1, there were 2,763 suspected, presumed, and confirmed dengue cases, with 694 classified as confirmed cases. Dengue type two continues to be the dominant strain.

The number of dengue related deaths stands at nine with seven classified as suspected and two as confirmed.

The Ministry of Health says all parishes continue to observe an increase in dengue cases, with Kingston and St. Andrew reporting the highest number of cases at 695.

St. Thomas maintains the highest case rate followed by Portland and Trelawny.

Meanwhile, of the suspected, presumed, and confirmed cases, there were more males than females with the highest number of cases observed in the five to 14-year-old age range...

Jamaica is reporting 870 confirmed cases of the dengue virus up to November 8, according to an update Thursday from Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.

That figure is part of the 3,147 suspected, presumed and confirmed cases in total.

Jamaica is reporting 870 confirmed cases of the dengue virus up to November 8, according to an update Thursday from Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.

That figure is part of the 3,147 suspected, presumed and confirmed cases in total.

The dengue serotype two strain was found in 863 of the confirmed cases.

“This is in keeping with the fact that type two dengue, we have not seen it being prevalent for just over ten years and so you will find that persons in that age group have not previously been exposed to dengue type two and so there is a high likelihood that they would be infected,” explained Chief Medical Officer, Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie.

Additionally, Tufton said nine dengue-related deaths have been recorded. Seven have been classified as suspected and two as confirmed...

Confirmed dengue cases in Jamaica climb to 1,301

Jamaica has passed the 1,000-mark in dengue fever cases amid an outbreak.

As of Thursday, November 30, the country had recorded 1,301 infections.

Further, the number of Jamaicans killed by the disease has climbed to 12 – eight classified as suspected and four as confirmed.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness said all parishes continue to observe an increase in dengue cases in 2023 compared to 2022, with Kingston & St Andrew reporting the highest number of infections, 1,232, for this year.

However, St Thomas continues with the highest rate of 541.4 cases per 100,000 population, followed by Portland (345.8), Trelawny with 315.5 per 100,000 and Manchester with 310.9 per 100,000 population...
