  • Dengue critical in Barbados

(Barbados Nation) The prevalence of dengue fever in Barbados is at a critical level, Minister of Health Donville Inniss disclosed on Monday.

The minister said Government and the Ministry of Health couldn?t win the war on their own ? all Barbadians had to get on board when it came to protecting the population from the deadly aedes aegypti mosquito.

Inniss said that it was time Barbadians took the threat of dengue more seriously, and started acting more responsibly by not dumping illegally and indiscriminately, thereby creating environments where the mosquito could breed.

The minister was speaking after the hospital received a donation of a television from local retail store Shop Smart.

    Dengue cases rise to 127

DENGUE FEVER remains a threat in Barbados with the number of cases soaring to 127.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Elizabeth Ferdinand, confirmed yesterday that dengue fever was very much on the rise though there has just one death so far.

?Dengue fever remains a threat to everyone. The spiralling cases are a cause for concern,? she said.

Last week, Barbados recorded its first dengue death of the year when an 80-year-old Christ Church man succumbed to the viral illness.

Dr Ferdinand reiterated the call for Barbadians to stop the spread of mosquito breeding by keeping their premises clean and to cover water containers such as buckets, small plastic containers and drums or to dispose of these in a proper manner.
