TEGUCIGALPA .- Health Authorities are investigating the possible mutation of a strain of the virus that causes dengue fever, which was detected in regions of South America and could affect the country.
Scientific research conducted in Brazil in recent months, revealed that a strain of dengue virus has undergone drastic mutations, which makes this disease in a condition far more lethal.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences UNAH undertake in the coming days, its own investigation into the deaths of 19 persons as a result of hemorrhagic dengue.
The Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras (UNAH) will perform in the coming days, its own investigation into the deaths of 19 persons as a result of hemorrhagic dengue.
The Dean of Medicine, Marco Tulio Medina, explained that the strain in the female mosquito "is apparently infected with particle and stings more when it begins to dawn, or when it starts to get dark."
"We must be alert in these hours must be greater prevention and avoid exposing ourselves when we go to work or return to our home, and avoid contaminating" he said.
The physician noted that "it is important to remember that dengue in Honduras has had a somewhat different profile, somehow dengue hemorrhagic fever cases may be linked to some genetic variants of the virus, as demonstrated by the researchers in Brazil" .
"We have to investigate if the factors of change in the country, as happened with the influenza virus A (H1N1) viruses are changing (...) and these changes are linked to immune factors," he said.
He added that begin to collect all cases of DHF, particularly those who have died, to determine "whether any changes in the clinical profile, tell us if there is a change in the virus, such as more rapid reduction of platelets, detailed.
VICTIM RISES TO 19
The latest confirmed deaths correspond to three children, a girl originally from Juticalpa, Olancho, one less than San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa one. While the confirmed cases of the hemorrhagic variety reach 512, compared to the previous year which reached 50.
According to figures from the Ministry of Health, the largest number of deaths from this disease are recorded in Francisco Morazan, eight of them only in the Central District, while the Department of Atlantis adds three deaths, El Paraiso, Choluteca two and one.
To date, the number of infected by dengue fever cases reach 14.609, an increase of more than 400% of the cases at the same date in 2009.
Only in the Hospital Escuela, it meets everyday over 500 people with symptoms of this disease, and tents have been installed in the suburbs to serve a growing number of patients.
Health officials said the cities with more cases of dengue are: Tegucigalpa, 7.739, 2.002 San Pedro Sula and Juticalpa, over 500.
For the effective elimination of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, health authorities recommend the elimination of breeding places of mosquitoes, making the "untadita" in batteries and barrels, remove containers that can hold water bottles, plates, or wheels and be alert to symptoms.
