    Outbreak of mosquito-spread virus reported in Yap; Guam residents cautioned

    7:40 p.m. - An outbreak of illness similar to dengue has been reported in Yap, according to a news release from the Secretariat for the Pacific Community.

    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on Friday, identified the Zika virus as the cause of the illness. The virus is similar to the dengue virus, causing similar but milder symptoms. Like dengue, it is transmitted by mosquitoes, and is not spread from person to person, the release stated.

    The symptoms are mild and generally last for 2 to 4 days and consist of:
    • a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body;
    • conjunctivitis; and
    • joint pain, mostly affecting the smaller joints of the hands and feet.

    As of Friday, 73 patients went to the Yap public hospital with at least two of these symptoms.

    Although cases of dengue and Zika fever have not yet been reported on Guam, it would be prudent for Guam residents to avoid mosquito bites as much as possible, according to Dr. Robert Haddock, epidemiologist for the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services.

    A joint investigation is being carried out by the public health authorities of Yap State and the Federated States of Micronesia, the CDC, and the World Health Organization.
