Innisfail residents in far north Queensland are being urged to take precautions against mosquitoes, with a new outbreak of dengue fever declared.

Public health authorities have confirmed a type one case and are likely to confirm a second case today.

The director of public health services, Dr Richard Gair, says it should be known by Friday whether it is linked to the Cairns outbreak, where there have been 74 type one cases since December.

"It might be an import, it might be a completely new strain," he said.

With Cairns currently dealing with 76 type 1 dengue fever cases, unit physician Dr Steven Donohue said a dengue outbreak in Townsville this wet season was ?guaranteed?. However, the department has declined to reveal the location of the two possible cases.

?I guarantee we?re going to have a dengue outbreak,?? Dr Donohue said.

                        ?All the factors are there.?
