Posted on October 28, 2012, Sunday

SARIKEI: The outbreak of dengue in the state is under control though the disease claimed one life.

Public Health Assistant Minister Dr Jerip Susil revealed the sad news to reporters during a press conference after officiating at the launch of the state-level Asean Dengue Day and Divisional-level Jelajah Sihat Bersama Komuniti at the civic centre here yesterday.

According to Jerip, a 55-year old dengue victim from a longhouse in Song died in Sibu General Hospital last Friday.

He attributed the man?s death to delay in seeking treatment. When admitted to Song Hospital last Tuesday, he was beyond saving with internal bleeding.

Dr Jerip said fatality could have been avoided if the man had sought treatment as soon as the symptoms showed up.

He revealed that a total of 959 dengue cases were reported in the state from January to Oct 13 this year from 776 cases during the corresponding period last year ? an increase of 183 cases or 23.6 percent.

Districts with drastic rise in number of dengue cases were Bau, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Julau, Pakan, Meradong, Bintulu, Belaga, Kapit and Kuching...
