    Man Dies of Congo Virus in Pakistan; Measures Implemented to Prevent Spread

    ISLAMABAD: A 47-year-old man died of the Congo virus in Malla Kalan village of Hazro tehsil in Attock district of Punjab province, prompting local authorities to initiate emergency measures to prevent further spread of the deadly disease.

    According to reports, the deceased, identified as Imran, developed fever and began experiencing bleeding symptoms on April 27. He was initially taken to Attock private Hospital, where his condition deteriorated rapidly. Subsequently, he was referred to a renowned private hospital in Rawalpindi, where he was diagnosed with the Congo virus based on test results. Tragically, Imran passed away on the fifth day of the illness.

    Upon learning of the confirmed case, Assistant Commissioner Hazro Kamran Ashraf took immediate action, coordinating special emergency measures to address the situation. The deceased was transported from Rawalpindi Hospital to his village under strict protective protocols and laid to rest after funeral prayers. Samples were collected from all members of the affected family and close contacts for testing, with no additional cases reported thus far.

    In response to the outbreak, health, sanitary, and veterinary teams were dispatched to Malla Kalan village to conduct thorough spraying and disinfection operations aimed at eliminating the spread of the Congo virus by animals. Additionally, livestock teams conducted extensive inspections of over 300 cattle in the area, with no signs of ticks or symptoms detected...

      ​A new case of Congo virus has been reported in Quetta, with a 32-year-old patient admitted to Fatima Jinnah Hospital’s isolation ward. According to hospital sources, the patient is a resident of Qila Saifullah and is receiving treatment.

      This is the 13th case of the Congo virus reported in Pakistan this year, with one patient losing his life to the virus in 2024. Earlier, an 18-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Congo virus died in Peshawar.

      The patient was admitted to Khyber Teaching Hospital on May 17 and tested positive for Congo virus on May 18. Sources said that the patient had been experiencing symptoms such as high fever, body aches, and vomiting, and had recently traveled to Punjab to purchase animals.

      No other cases of Congo virus have been confirmed among the patient’s contacts, including hospital staff and family members. It is pertinent to mention here that the National Institute of Health (NIH) issued advisories for the prevention and control of CCHF.​..

        The district administration has begun screening residents of a locality and carrying out spray after a man was confirmed as afflicted by Congo virus.

        The patient, Asif, works in an animal shed in Qamar Mashani.

        According to local sources, the man had been suffering from fever for the past few days. After a check-up, the case of Congo virus was confirmed and he was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad.

        On learning of the confirmation of Congo virus, the district administration, health and livestock departments started preventive measures.

        The district administration started screening of residents in the vicinity and spraying to prevent the virus from spreading in the area.​..

            Confirmed Congo patient undergoing treatment at BBH

            Rawalpindi:A confirmed patient of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) belonging to Tehsil Kahuta, some 42 kilometres from Rawalpindi, has been undergoing treatment here at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) while two confirmed patients of Congo fever have lost their lives due to the deadly infection at the BBH in the last two weeks.

            The 41-year old female patient Iram wife of Sultan was brought to the BBH from a village in Kahuta with signs and symptoms of CCHF and later she was confirmed positive for Congo fever. According to the hospital administration, the patient is stable, at least, at the time. Earlier on July 8 and July 13, two confirmed patients of Congo fever died of the infection here at BBH. Both the patients Hassan son of Fiaz, aged 27 and Naseem wife of Asif, aged 35 were brought to the hospital from Chakwal district, some 80 kilometres from Rawalpindi.

            The patients died of CCHF at BBH in the last two weeks were from two different families however all the Congo patients taken to the BBH this year had history of animal handling, said Additional Medical Superintendent (Administration) at BBH Dr. Inayat ur Rahman when contacted by ‘The News’ on Monday. It is important to mention here that in the last two-and-a-half months, a total of four patients have lost their lives due to Congo fever at BBH. Two confirmed CCHF patients who were taken to the BBH from Attock District died of the infection at BBH on May 3 and May 20 this year. Apparently, the CCHF cases reported at the BBH were of sporadic nature, said Dr. Inayat.​..

              The first case of the Congo virus this year has been reported in Karachi, with the patient currently receiving medical care at Jinnah Hospital.

              The patient, a 32-year-old man, was admitted to Ward 5 at Jinnah Hospital with high fever and diarrhoea. The situation escalated when laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the deadly Congo virus, causing alarm within the hospital.

              Hospital officials stated that the patient’s condition required immediate transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU). "Congo virus is a life-threatening infection with a survival rate of only 10%," they noted.​..

                ​KARACHI: Sindh Health Department has reported 13 cases of Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) so far this year, with four cases emerging in August alone.

                The cases, all treated at Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, reflect the ongoing struggle against this deadly viral disease, officials said on Wednesday.

                Earlier in the year, four CCHF cases were reported in March, followed by three in May, two in June, and the recent four in August in Karachi.​..

                    According to the administration of Fatima Jinnah Institute of Chest Diseases, Muhammad Iqbal, a 42-year-old resident of Zarghoon Road Quetta, was admitted to the isolation ward of the institute.

                    His samples were sent for lab reports, which proved to be positive. Later, the patients succumbed to the Congo virus.

                    In the current season, the number of patients affected by the Congo virus in Balochistan has reached 18, with the death toll at five.​..

                      ...In the latest case, a 14-year-old boy named Siraj Ahmed from Khanozai, a town 77 kilometres from Quetta, tested positive for the virus, according to a senior doctor at Quetta’s Fatima Jinnah Chest Hospital.

                      The patient is currently receiving treatment in the hospital's dedicated Congo isolation ward. Dr Zubair Mandokhail, the deputy medical superintendent at the hospital, mentioned that another suspected case is under observation, with confirmation pending.

                      Balochistan has reported 23 cases of Congo fever so far this year, resulting in five deaths since January.

                      Medical professionals in the region note that the incidence of Congo fever typically spikes during the summer, particularly around Eid Al-Adha, an Islamic festival where large numbers of animals are slaughtered.

                      The festival season often sees an influx of Afghan patients with the virus seeking better medical care in Quetta, further straining local healthcare facilities.

                      Dr Ali Ahmed Reki, the medical superintendent at Fatima Jinnah Chest Hospital, revealed that nearly 45 suspected cases have been handled this year, with 23 confirmed as positive.​..

                          ​Two more cases of Congo fever were reported on Thursday in Balochistan, taking the number of total cases to 26 across the province in the ongoing year.

                          According to details, the test reports of both the patients went positive. The affected person, hailing from Quetta and Loralai, had been shifted to the wards, where they are receiving treatment.

                          The Fatima Jinnah Hospital administration said that 55-year old Abdul Hameed belongs from Quetta and 60-year-old Muhammad Khan hails from Loralai.

                          Meanwhile, two of the suspected patients from Quetta had also been admitted to the hospital. The test samples of the suspected patients had been sent to the laboratory. 55-year old Naeema Jan belongs from Chaman Phatak, whereas 31-year-old Roohullah belongs from Hazara Town.

                          Meanwhile, the administration said that five patients had succumbed to the congovirus in the past five years in the province.​..

                            The woman, aged 40 and hailing from Musa Khel, was brought to the Fatima Jinnah Institute of Chest Diseases in critical condition. She passed away before her test results for the virus were returned.

                            In a separate case, 23-year-old Abdul Khaliq from Kuchlak admitted to the same institute was confirmed to have the Congo virus after testing. His condition is being closely monitored.​..

                              Bahawalpur reports one Congo fever case

                              BAHAWALPUR: The threat of the Congo fever continues to loom in the country as Bahawalpur reported on Saturday one case of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

                              According to details, 42-year-old Zafar Iqbal belongs from Khanewal, and was shifted to Bahawal Victoria Hospital after suffering from fever and his nose was bleeding.

                              The case of the dairy farm worker was declared a suspected Congo fever.

                              Iqbal had been receiving treatment at the dengue isolation ward.

                              Few days back, two cases of Congo fever were reported in Balochistan, taking the number of total cases to 26 across the province in the ongoing year.​..
