Seven new cases of C. difficile occur in Cape Breton hospitals

SYDNEY ? It is not an outbreak, but there are seven new cases of hospital-acquired C. difficile in two hospitals within Cape Breton district health authority.
Although there is no cause for alarm, the cases at Northside General and Cape Breton Regional serve as a reminder to staff and visitors to remain vigilant, in light of two outbreaks at facilities under the direction of the authority last year and early this year.
?We consider the definition of an outbreak as unusual or unexpected cases at a given time in a given area,? Greg Boone, the authority?s public affairs director, said in a telephone interview Thursday.
