    NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. - A second patient associated with a C. difficile outbreak at Greater Niagara General Hospital has died.

    The Niagara Health System says the patient who died Wednesday had tested positive for hospital-associated C. difficile...

    ...The outbreak declared Dec. 8 came six weeks after another C. difficile outbreak ended...

    Currently, there are 20 cases of C. difficile at the hospital.

      Third death associated with outbreak at GNGH

      A third patient associated with the C. difficile outbreak at Greater Niagara General Hospital has died.

      ?It is with regret that we report the death of a patient associated with the outbreak on Unit D on January 27, 2012,? the Niagara Health System said in a statement released as part of a daily update on the outbreak at GNGH?s Unit D. ?This patient had multiple health issues and tested positive for hospital-associated C. difficile.? As is with all deaths which have occurred during the outbreak, the health system has reported the death has been reported to the Coroner`s office and will be reviewed by the NHS to determine the role C. difficile had or did not have in the death.
      Currently, there are 16 cases ? down one from Monday ? at GNGH. Of those, five are hospital-associated cases (up one) and 11 community/other cases (down two)...

        The latest C. difficile outbreak at the Greater Niagara General Hospital is over.

        Officials with the Niagara Health System reported the outbreak that was declared Dec. 7 was officially over on Wednesday.

        Three patients with C.difficle died during the latest outbreak...

          It?s not something that gets said often, given the political storm that often swirls around the Niagara Health System. But it?s true enough.

          The NHS has become a provincial leader in infection control.

          ?We said the NHS would be a leader and we are,? said the health system?s acting CEO and president Sue Matthews.

          Other hospital systems, most recently Bluewater Health in Sarnia, are turning to the NHS to learn how to combat superbug outbreaks...
