GHS confirms Cholera cases in Greater Accra

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed cases of cholera in the Ada West and Ada East Districts of the Greater Accra Region, raising public health concerns.

The first confirmed case was reported on October 4, 2024, when a patient presented at a health facility with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The individual had recently attended a funeral in Ada East.

Since then, a total of nine cholera cases have been confirmed in both Ada West and Ada East as of October 11, 2024...

Ghana has so far confirmed 43 cholera cases with 2 deaths recorded.

12 persons are on admission and close to 200 suspected cases all within the Ada East and West districts of the Greater Accra Region.

A cholera outbreak in Kasoa has claimed five lives, with 30 others currently receiving treatment at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital.

Cholera outbreak: 10 people dead, over 72 others infected

Ten persons have died with over 72 others infected, following a cholera outbreak in the Greater Accra and Central regions over the past three weeks.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) confirmed that the cases were recorded in Ada East and West, Kpone Katamanso, Korle Klottey, Ashaiman, Ga South, Accra Metro, all in the Greater Accra Region and Awutu Senya West and East, Gomoa East and Efutu Districts in the Central Region.

Four out of the six deaths were recorded in the Awutu Senya district while the remaining six deaths were recorded in Ada and other districts.

Dr Franklin Asiedu-Bokoe, Director for Public Health, GHS, told the Ghana News Agency that most of the infections recorded were not severe but fatalities are being recorded due to the delay in reporting cases to the health facilities.

“Deaths are occurring, because most of the patients who had cholera tried to self-medicate, some report to the hospital three days after the cholera infection,” he said...

A total of 16 people have died, and 115 others have been infected in the ongoing cholera outbreak in various parts of the country within the past month.

Dr. Dennis Laryea, Head of Disease Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, told the Ghana News Agency that 1,350 suspected cholera cases have been reported in the Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, and Western Regions.

He noted that cholera infections have been recorded in about 12 districts across these four regions, with a Case Fatality Rate of 1.2 percent.

Ghana records 21 deaths following Cholera outbreak

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 21 people have died within two months following the Cholera outbreak in Ghana.

The outbreak’s epicentre includes three hotspot sub-districts in the Awutu Senya East District of the Central Region: Akwelley, Kasoa North, and Odupong Kpehe.

“In response, a Cholera Vaccination Campaign is set to be introduced,” a statement from the country’s lead health agency stated. The campaign is expected from November 30 to December 3, 2024.

The vaccine will be administered to individuals aged two years and older, serving as an additional layer of protection alongside existing preventive measures...

Western Region records 15 cholera deaths

The Western Region has so far recorded 15 deaths from the cholera outbreak with Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality as the epicentres.

The Deputy Regional Director in charge of Public Health, Dr Gifty Amugi disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Monday.

According to her, over 1,000 people have reported to various health facilities with symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting.

However, 90 of these reported cases have been confirmed as cholera.

“The outbreak started in the 4th of November and we were committed to curb it but it heightened from the beginning of December. We so far have over 1,000 reported cases but 90 have been confirmed with 15 deaths reported,” she detailed...

4,155 cholera cases with 35 deaths recorded by December 23 – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported a total of 4,155 suspected cholera cases nationwide, with 35 deaths as of December 23, 2024.

In a statement, GHS Director General, Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye noted that the majority of fatalities occurred within 24 hours of admission.

The outbreak, which began in the Greater Accra Region in October, has since affected Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions. The Western Region remains the hardest-hit area, reporting 17 of the 35 deaths.

“As of 23rd December 2024, a total of 4,155 suspected cases with 35 deaths had been reported with majority of the deaths occurring within 24 hours of admission. The most affected region is the Western Region, which has reported 17 deaths,” portions of the release stated...

Cholera outbreak: Death toll hits 37

The death toll from the cholera outbreak in parts of Ghana has shot up to 37, with the number of confirmed cases also increasing from 346 to 359, as of December 26, 2024

The two new deaths were recorded in the Western region. This has prompted the Ghana Health Service to undertake mortality audits.

Out of the number of deaths recorded, five were brought in dead, as 91 out of 276 districts share between them 4,618 cumulative suspected cases.
