WHO scales up response following Sudan declaration of cholera outbreak

    PrintPDF

29 September 2023, Cairo, Egypt – Sudan has declared a cholera outbreak in Gedaref State, where 264 suspected cholera cases, 4 confirmed cases and 16 associated deaths had been reported by 25 September 2023. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether cholera has also spread to Khartoum and South Kordofan states, where increased cases of acute watery diarrhoea have been reported.

Dr Nima Abid, WHO Representative in Sudan, visited Gedaref State on 17 September 2023 and met with health authorities and partners to coordinate the response. “Unhindered access to affected and neighbouring localities is essential to respond effectively to the ongoing outbreak,” said Dr Abid. “A cholera outbreak can have a devastating effect in the context of a health system already overstretched because of war, shortages of medical supplies and health workers, malnutrition and access challenges.”

Even before the outbreak was declared, WHO had already provided cholera supplies, including antibiotics, oral rehydration solution and intravenous fluids, to 6 states, including Gedaref, Khartoum and South Kordofan, as well as rapid diagnostic test kits to all 18 states of Sudan. WHO was also supporting 3 cholera isolation centres in Gedaref State – 2 of them with medicines and health supplies, and fully supporting the final centre with the provision of equipment and medical supplies.

Earlier this year, more than 2800 Sudanese health workers took part in an online capacity-building programme conducted by WHO on the management of acute watery diarrhoea in times of crisis. Another online training course, on cholera, dengue and malaria management protocols, took place this week, for more than 8000 Sudanese health workers. On-the-job training on surveillance and standard case management for cholera and other infectious diseases was also conducted in Gedaref for 185 health workers.

Currently, WHO is deploying rapid response teams to the affected localities and is actively supporting the Ministry of Health to transfer samples of suspected cholera cases to the Public Health Laboratory in Port Sudan, a facility capacitated by WHO to provide a national reference service. Surveillance is ongoing in affected and high-risk areas to identify and address risk factors. Plans have been initiated to facilitate a request to the International Coordinating Group on Oral Cholera Vaccine Provision for Cholera Control for oral cholera vaccines to protect the population and contain the outbreak.

With support from WHO and health partners, the Ministry of Health is also coordinating efforts to scale up access to clean water and sanitation facilities, as well as ensuring affected and at-risk communities are aware of transmission risks and proper hygiene practices to reduce contamination risks and prevent further spread of the outbreak.

As a result of the war that erupted in April 2023, Sudan is grappling with unprecedented mass displacement, disease outbreaks and malnutrition, which have been compounded by heavy rains and flooding. The health system is overwhelmed by attacks on health facilities and the scarcity of medical supplies and equipment, health workers and operational funds. About 70% of hospitals in conflict-affected states are non-functional, while the active hospitals and clinics in non-conflict-affected states are overwhelmed by the influx of internally displaced people.

Over 1400 suspected cases, 64 Cholera deaths in Sudan: WHO

October 19, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – At least 1,457 suspected cholera cases and 64 associated deaths have been reported from four states of Sudan as of 17 October, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

This comes after the country declared outbreaks of the disease in Gedaref State on September 26 as well as in Khartoum and South Kordofan states on October 7, 2023. Other suspected cases have also been reported from Al-Jazirah state.

The outbreak comes at a time that Sudan’s health care system is stretched to the limit, with about 70% of hospitals in conflict-affected states are non-functional. Also, facilities in the non-conflict affected states are overwhelmed by the influx of displaced people...

Cholera and dengue fever continue to spread rapidly in Sudan
27/10/2023 15:41 SHARG EL NIL / WAD MADANI / EL GEDAREF / EN NEHOUD

Sudan is grappling with a growing health crisis as dengue fever and cholera continue to spread across the country. The rapid expansion of these diseases has raised serious concerns, posing significant challenges to the country’s healthcare infrastructure, as new cases were reported from Khartoum, El Gezira, El Gedaref, and West Kordofan this week.

In Khartoum North, the Sharg El Nil (East Nile) Emergency Room reported a surge in cholera cases in the densely populated Haj Yousef neighbourhoods over the past week. The El Ban Jedid Hospital recorded 40 cases, including two fatalities, from October 14 to 19.

The disease spread to new areas, with 12 neighbourhoods in El Haj Yousef affected, in particular the areas of El Tawidat and Dar El Salam.

In El Gezira, south of Khartoum, the state Health Emergencies and Epidemic Control Department registered a total of 274 suspected cases of cholera, “including eight fatalities and 183 recoveries,” between October 9-23.

The department’s cumulative report for dengue fever, covering the period from September 13 to October 18, recorded 148 suspected cases, “with 126 confirmed positive cases through rapid examination and two fatalities”...

Scores felled by Sudan cholera outbreak
          06/11/2023 17:32 EL GEDAREF / SENNAR

The Ministry of Health and Social Development in eastern Sudan’s El Gedaref reported that it recorded nearly 1,000 confirmed cases of cholera out of a total of 1,187 suspected cases between August 26 and November 5, including 36 deaths. Since august, the disease spread to many more areas in the state, the Health Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

The director of the Environmental Health Department of the Health Ministry, Mohamed Daoud, attributed the spread of the disease to the lack of capabilities available to address and combat the disease, in addition to its spread in neighbouring states and the weak level of health care in the region.

The Minister of Health in neighbouring Sennar, Ibrahim El Awad, reported that the state recorded the first three suspected cases of cholera in the village of Basut, in the northern part of the state, along the border with El Gezira.

“The patients last week went on a social visit to El Hidab village in El Gezira and transferred the infection to Sennar, he said in a press statement in the state capital of Singa yesterday.

The Ministry of Health in El Gezira announced a rise in cholera cases in the state to 256, including 11 deaths.

He said that the report puts a moral and legal responsibility on the warring parties.

              November 23, 2023

(PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s Ministry of Health has reported a significant surge in cholera cases across the country, with a total of 3,359 cases, including 108 fatalities, recorded to date.

In response to the alarming rise in cholera infections, the Ministry of Health has initiated a large-scale vaccination campaign in two states, Al-Gezira and Gedaref. The campaign is scheduled to run until November 25.

A Ministry of Health official informed Sudan Tribune that the Red Sea State has seen a concerning rise in cholera cases, with 145 confirmed infections and 6 deaths.

Concerns are also mounting over the potential spread of cholera in White Nile State, where the number of cases has reached 132, resulting in 8 deaths. Al Gezhira State, on the other hand, has recorded 993 cases, including 20 fatalities.

The Ministry of Health official acknowledged the challenges posed by the escalating cholera outbreak, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict and the lack of aid and medical supplies reaching conflict zones.

The White Nile Health Emergency Committee announced on Wednesday that it recorded 27 cholera-related deaths, and a total of 850 suspected cases in the state.

In a statement, acting state Health Minister Ezzeldin Alwan blamed water and food contamination for the spread of watery diarrhoea and cholera. He called for increased environmental, health, and food safety interventions in areas with the highest infections rates, “most notably in Ed Duweim, Rabak, Kosti, and Gali”...

January 28, 2024 (ATBARA) – The Ministry of Health in the River Nile State has confirmed an ongoing surge in cholera cases, reaching a total of 47 as of Sunday. Of these cases, six were reported in Atbara, 39 in Al-Damer, and two in each of Shendi and Al-Matama.

The Sudanese government first announced the outbreak of cholera in September last year, and the disease has since spread to several other states. The United Nations has projected that over three million Sudanese could be affected by cholera.

In response to the rising number of cases, the River Nile State Minister of Health, Amal Ahmed Majzoub, has launched a disease vector control campaign as part of the environmental sanitation project conducted by the Islamic Relief Agency in the state...

The Federal Ministry of Health has acknowledged the outbreak of cholera in Sudan, with 17 deaths and 268 cases reported in Kassala, El Gezira, and Khartoum states. The ministry indicated that the Wad El Hilu area in Kassala alone has recorded seven deaths and more than 150 cases.

This is the first time the Ministry of Health has acknowledged the outbreak, since the first suspected cases appeared three weeks ago. Until now, the ministry has euphemistically referred to cases of ‘acute watery diarrhoea’, which is one of the symptoms of cholera*.

A media circular on Monday says that Minister of Health, Dr Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, visited Wad El Hilu, accompanied by the Director General of the Ministry of Health in the state, Dr Ali Adam, to assess the situation of the disease outbreak.

During his visit to Wad El Hilu, the Minister also visited the El Magarif water station, which 40 per cent of the local population depends on, in addition to other local water sources, noting the importance of chlorinating water...

                            GENEVA

Sudan reported a total of 28 deaths from cholera in just one month, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Friday.

At a weekly press conference in Geneva, Shible Sahbani, WHO representative in Sudan, and Kristine Hambrouck, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the country, said that another wave of cholera outbreak occurred in Sudan due to floods in the country as well as inadequate water, hygiene and sanitation in the camps for displaced people.

Sahbani recalled that the cholera outbreak was declared in the country on Aug. 12.

“In one month since the first suspected cases were reported, we have 658 cases and 28 deaths reported from five states, with a high case-fatality ratio of 4.3%,” Sahbani stated.

Out of these five states, Kassala is reporting the highest number of cases with 473 patients, followed by Gedaref with 110, and Al Jazirah with 51, while Khartoum and River Nile are reporting fewer numbers, the official stressed.

These new cholera cases are unrelated to the previous outbreak declared in September 2023, which ended in May 2024 after two incubation periods with no new cases, he said, noting that the WHO is collaborating with health ministries and has prepositioned cholera kits and medical supplies in high-risk states to support the response, even in areas like Khartoum and Al Jazirah where access is challenging due to security issues...
