Panama declared a health alert to prevent entry of cholera into the country, and avoid situations such as Haiti has faced, said Tuesday the Minister of Health, Franklin Vergara.
"It is important to emphasize hygiene measures, especially now that some communities in the country suffered the ravages of nature and the waters are polluted, " Vergara said, referring to recent floods that killed 10 people and thousands of victims.
He called on the population extreme health measures to prevent entry of cholera, which has recently beaten to Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the United States.
Vergara said that Panama "is not free from the disease"because of its status as a transit country, so it "has not dropped their guard and kept surveillance at ports and airports around the country. "
He also called on public and private entities, directly related to water supply and sanitation, maintain quality and the public to implement proper waste disposal, as well as constant hand washing and adding chlorine to drinking water
