A statement issued yesterday on the update of the out break of Cholera and Measles from January to 23 August, 2010, said the government, through the Ministry of Health warned that although most outbreaks occurred in the Northwest and Northeast zones the epidemiological evidence from the diseases indicates that the entire country is at risk.

Cholera outbreak: Bauchi death toll rises to 72
Written by Ishola Michael, Bauchi Monday, 30 August 2010

Bauchi State office of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, has declared that the death toll in the cholera outbreak, which affected eight local government areas of the state has risen to 72.

Secretary to the Red Cross in Bauchi State, Abubakar Adamu, who disclosed this to newsmen at the weekend, said that five people died within the past two weeks, thus increasing the official number of deaths from 67 to 72.

He explained that officials of the Red Cross were involved in carrying out chlorination of sources of the disease with government and other stakeholders in the state.

The Red Cross however believed that the high number of cases of 1,725 recorded in the state would have reduced if adequate social mobilisation was carried out by the state government...

Fresh cholera outbreak claims 7 lives in Nigeria's Zamfara State

        English.news.cn 2010-09-02 15:28:25 FeedbackPrintRSS

LAGOS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A fresh outbreak of cholera in five local government areas of northern Nigeria's Zamfara State has killed seven persons, according to the latest official report.

Zamfara State Commissioner for Health Saad Idris told a news conference in Gusau, the state capital, on Wednesday that a total of 54 cases had been recorded as a result contaminated water.

He said the affected local government areas are Bungudu, Gusau, Maradun, Shinkafi and Zurmi.

Idris said the ministry had already deployed a rapid response team of medical experts to the affected areas in order to contain the situation.

The commissioner advised the people to desist from drinking contaminated water to curb the spread of the epidemic to other parts of the state.

Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health recently put the cholera death toll at 352.

The north of Nigeria suffers epidemics of diseases such as cholera, measles and meningitis almost every year.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, leading to serious dehydration and can be fatal if not properly treated.

Nigeria: Cholera Kills 80 in Adamawa

Yola ? Eighty persons have so far been confirmed dead as a result of cholera outbreak in nine local government areas of Adamawa State with over 1,000 cases recorded.

The state government has procured the Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) worth N1.6 million as part of measures to curtail the spread of the disease, officials say.

The state director of disease control, Dr. L.C. Barka, who confirmed the death toll to our correspondent yesterday, said rapid response teams from the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with other donor agencies were deployed to the affected areas and they are on the top of the situation.

"There is an impressive improvement in the control of the epidemic," Dr Barka said.

Worst hit is Madagali Local Government Area, where all the wards have been enveloped by the epidemic. Other local councils affected are Yola South, Demsa, Numan , Guyuk, Ganye, Michika and Lamurde.

While attributing the outbreak to poor hygiene and misapplication of drugs, Dr Barka expressed concern that ignorance by some local health officials compounded the situation. The director stressed the need for people to be health conscious and report any strange disease in their locality for prompt attention.

Cholera spreads to Nigeria?s Federal Capital Territory

APA Abuja (Nigeria) In spite of supposed federal government?s efforts to curtail the spread of cholera which had killed more than 700 people in the 11 Northern and some South Western states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had been reported to have joined the victims with 8 deaths, an official said in Abuja on Thursday.

Eight people have died and 205 others are hospitalised in Kuje Area Council near Abuja from a cholera outbreak, Habila Domshak, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer in the council said in Abuja on Thursday.

Domshak said the first case was confirmed in Kabi Mangoro community in the area, while subsequent occurrences were in Kahudahanu in Gaube ward, Sabo Rubokya in Kwaku ward and Agwan Gede in Kuje town.

"The first case of the epidemic was confirmed in Kabi Mangoro and since then it has gone round so many other communities. It took the intervention of the Kuje Area Council through the provision of drugs to reduce the spread of the disease," he said...

                        Cholera epidemic kills 800 people

The worst cholera epidemic in Nigeria in 19 years has killed nearly 800 people in two months. The disease is also spreading to Cameroon, Chad and Niger, where it has killed hundreds of others.

The current outbreak began during the summer, and was initially concentrated in Nigeria's northern states. Since then it has began to spread to neighbouring countries: Chad has reported more than 40 deaths, while 300 people have died from the disease in Cameroon. Cholera, which is spread by drinking contaminated water, is a recurring problem in districts with poor sanitation: more than half Nigeria's 150 million people lack access to clean drinking water. This year's rainy season produced floods which made water sources particularly susceptible to contamination. Nigeria last saw an outbreak on a comparable scale in 1991, when 7,654 people died, the World Health Organisation said.

Katsina ? Fifteen persons have so far died while many others are in hospital following an outbreak of cholera in Runka village of Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State within the past two weeks.

Our correspondent who visited the village Tuesday reports that despite series of interventions by government and philanthropic organizations, victims still besieged the only heath facility of Runka maternal and child hospital which also served about 20 more villages in the area.

A nurse at the clinic told this reporter that at the peak of the outbreak, the facility admitted between 40 and 50 patients daily in the 20 bed capacity hospital and most of them slept on mats or the bare floor.

Cholera epidemic: Far from being over

When Abdul Hazzan (not real name) woke up in an unfamiliar room with streaks of sunlight seeping in through decrepit blinds, he became aware of painful moans from other people around him. The strong smell of disinfectants made the father of three realize he was in a hospital.

Abdul was diagnosed with cholera and as he drew in his first conscious breaths in 24 hours, he was jolted by the sight of intravenous fluids sticking from his left hand. Readjusting his position on the lumpy bed was a huge task due to dehydration and numbness of his limbs by the disease.

Abdul was rattled from his sleep in the middle of the night by stomach cramps. In less than 30 minutes, his body was taken over by violent waves of simultaneous vomiting and diarrhoea and he gradually slipped into unconsciousness. This was how he landed in the hospital.

Hundreds of people like him are either dead or lying critically ill in various hospitals scattered across 11 states of the federation. Like a gale of wind, cholera epidemic swept through the country, leaving in its path alarming death rate and hollowed eyed victims clinging weakly to life.

Cholera is a disease caused by a bacterium known medically as Vibro Cholerae. It can be found in human and animal waste. It becomes a disease when the pathogen finds its way into food and water meant for human consumption. Cholera mainly affects the digestive system and can be contagiously spread from infected persons through unhealthy environment and inadequate ventilation. The main symptoms are high fever, diarrhoea (profuse watery stool) and vomiting that lead to dehydration or death.

Cholera can be very fatal if not well treated on time. Children and the aged are more susceptible to death from disease. The recent cholera outbreak witnessed in Nigeria can be described as an epidemic of monumental proportion. So far, the death toll recorded in 11 states has been put at about 352, while the number of those infected has risen to 6, 437.

The Zamfara State government Tuesday said 103 persons had died of cholera in some local government areas. The Commissioner for Health Dr Sa'ad Idris said this in Gusau while announcing the outbreak of the disease.

He said the state recorded 892 cholera cases in eight local government areas, describing the figure as frightening. Idris attributed the epidemic to poor environmental sanitation, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and defecation by the citizens of the affected areas...
