Sudan: Cholera Spreads Amid Govt Denial

Eastern Sudan ? Cholera continues to spread in Sudan's eastern states, with more fatalities and infections reported across White Nile state, North Kordofan and Sennar. The federal authorities are beginning to respond, however Khartoum continues to refer to the outbreak as 'acute watery diarrhoea'.

The official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reports that Sudan's First Vice-President and National Prime Minister, Lt. Gen. Bakri Hassan Salih, has given a directive to provide "all necessary means for containing the watery diarrhoea cases in the White Nile state through urgent and effective interventions".

Salih met with Minister of State for Health, Dr Ferdos Abdulrahman at the Republican Palace on Wednesday to discuss health situations in the country and in the White Nile in particular and efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health in this connection...

South Sudan records 248 deaths from cholera since June, 2016

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Operations in Southern Sudan said 248 death cases of cholera had been reported in the country since its official outbreak in June 2016 out of the 8,160 cases reported in more than 19 provinces.

"Most of the casualties were confined to areas adjacent to the Nile River at the beginning of its deployment in June 2016, but in the last four weeks new cases have begun to appear in remote areas of the Nile, demonstrating the increased rate and rapid spread of cholera in Southern Sudan," the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Operations (OCHA) said in a statement on Monday.


According to the statement, 70 percent of the cases focused on people under the age of thirty years.
The outbreak of cholera this year is the largest and most deadly of people in terms of length of time since the country's independence, "the UN office said.

Cases of cholera or in officialese, watery diarrhea in Sudan have increased in White Nile State with 75 deaths, and 4,188 infections, the state?s governor said Tuesday.

?The number of infection cases with cholera, since the disease?s appearance on April 8 this year, has reached 4,188 cases, including 75 death cases,? Abdul-Hameed Musa Kasha, Governor of White Nile State, said when addressing the state?s legislative council Tuesday.

Meanwhile, social media activists published photos and information, which said were authentic, on cases of cholera in some hospitals in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The Sudanese health authorities have not yet published any indicators on the spread of the disease, its causes or the number of the people infected.

Khartoum State?s Minister of Health Mamoun Humaida, in a telephone conversation with Xinhua, declined to give any information about the disease...

Sudan?s cholera epidemic: ?14,659 infected, 292 dead?

On Thursday, Sudan?s Health Minister Bahar Idris Abugarda briefed the parliament about the spread of the ?acute water diarrhoea? epidemic in the country. New cholera cases were reported in the country?s capital, White Nile state, and North Kordofan.

The Minister told the parliament in a session organised by the Committee on Health, Environment, and Population, that between August 2016 and May 2017 the Ministry recorded 14,659 people infected with watery diarrhoea. 292 patients died.

The Sudanese health authorities still refer to ?watery diarrhoea? cases, though Sudanese medics have confirmed that the disease is cholera. Mentioning the infectious disease by its real name is not allowed in Sudan.

Cholera kills eight in two days across Sudan

Eight people have reportedly died and 231 others infected with cholera in Sudan?s Khartoum, White Nile, South Kordofan, and North Kordofan states on Monday and Tuesday.

Dr Ali Bashir, the spokesman for the National Epidemiology Corporation told Radio Dabanga that in Khartoum three people died at Bashayer hospital while three more died at El Sheikh El Bashir village in Jebel Awliya in southern Khartoum state.

Since this outbreak began one year ago, over 11,000 cases have been reported, including at least 190 deaths, according to the World Health Organization and South Sudan?s government. WHO says 2017 shows a slight increase in cases, which coincides with the recent surge of displaced people across the country as civil war moves well into its fourth year.

The fast-developing, highly contagious infection can spread in areas without clean drinking water and with poor sanitation. It can result in death through dehydration if left untreated.

Pieri and surrounding areas in April experienced their first cholera outbreak in 21 years. Community leaders say 36 people have died in two months alone. They attribute the severity of the outbreak to an inability to support an overwhelming increase in the town?s population.

Suspected diarrhoea kills 38 Sudanese in one month: UN

Suspected acute diarrhoea has killed 38 Sudanese in the past month and 317 since August 2016, the UN said Wednesday, warning the outbreak could worsen ahead of the rainy season.


The UN children's agency?or UNICEF?said cases of suspected acute diarrhoea were reported across 12 of the North African country's 18 states during this period.
"Over 16,600 cases of acute watery diarrhoea in the past 10 months alone were reported with 317 deaths, which is a rate double than the alert level," UNICEF said, raising a previous death toll of 279 reported by UN agencies in late May.

Sudanese doctors urge measures against cholera outbreak

Sudanese doctors and aid workers urged the government to declare a state of emergency over a cholera outbreak and delay the start of the school year, which began on Sunday, although authorities say the situation is under control.

The disease, which is passed through contaminated water, has surfaced across the country, including in the capital, Khartoum, prompting the U.S. Embassy last month to issue a warning and note that fatalities had been confirmed. Egypt has begun screening passengers from Sudan at Cairo's international airport.

Some 22,000 cases of acute watery diarrhea have led to at least 700 fatalities since May 20, said Hossam al-Amin al-Badawi, of the independent Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors. He added that the condition is most likely cholera, but the government refuses to officially release test results for it.

Sudan Insider - Cholera Across Sudan Rising

According to Sudan's health ministry, roughly 265 deaths and 16,000 cases of "acute watery diarrhoea" have been recorded in 11 states across Sudan. The independent Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, however, have cited 22,000 cases and 700 fatalities since late May 2017. This figure is comparable to that of the National Epidemiological Corporation that cites 23,766 infections and 820 deaths since May.

The first cases were identified in Blue Nile State in August last year. According to UN estimates, White Nile State remains the most affected area with a large number of cases cited in South Sudanese refugee camps where cramped conditions and inadequate water supplies have increased contagiousness.

The Doctor's Committee expects to see more cholera cases with the start of the rainy season, especially within displaced camps. In late June to early July, the medical organisation reported over 200 new cholera cases in North Darfur State with 100 more cases reported later in the month at the state's Kabkabiya Hospital alone...

Rainy Season Worsens Cholera Outbreak in South Sudan

The effects of the rainy season in South Sudan aggravate the care of patients with cholera detected three months ago and spread the virus, an international organization said today.

Our Health and Water teams are responding to the epidemic, by offering cholera treatment and preventive measures throughout the African country. Since June18, 2016, there have been 18,000 infections and 328 deaths from the virus, but a rapid response is needed to stop such an outbreak, added the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The IOM said that many of the areas affected by the contagious disease were located on the banks of the Nile, so the rains this season were aggravating affected communities´ situations and threatened to spread the virus even more...

Cholera spreads in northern Sudan

Cholera has extended to the north of Sudan and reached Abri in Halfa locality, where four cases were reported on Monday. A hospital recorded more infected cases coming from the gold mines in Northern State.

The patients are treated in the isolation ward placed outside of the health centre of Abri, a town along the Nile.

Five cases are being treated in Wadi Halfa hospital in Northern State, a source reported to Radio Dabanga yesterday.

Also in El Mahas in Dalgo locality, five people suffering from cholera reported to the health centre on Monday, bringing to the total number of infections the centre has seen to 70...

New cholera cases in Darfur, numbers drop in Sennar

One cholera patient died and 39 new cases were reported in Darfur over the weekend. In eastern Sudan?s Sennar, the spread of the infectious disease seems to be halted.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga from Ghurra Farajawiya in El Sareif Beni Hussein locality in North Darfur, a volunteer reported that one person died of cholera on Saturday.

Four new cases were reported in the area. Two of them were transferred to the isolation unit in the nearby village of Ghurra El Zawiya.

The isolation centre in West Darfur?s Murnei camp for the displaced received 25 new cholera patients on Saturday, a camp elder reported. He said that 47 cholera patients were being treated at the camp?s isolation centre on Sunday.

The isolation ward of the Royal Hospital of Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur, admitted 10 new cases on Saturday and Sunday...

Sudan: Dozens Die of Cholera in Darfur's East Jebel Marra Within a Week

East Jebel Marra / Kass / Nierteti / Kalma ? The cholera infection rates are rapidly increasing in East Jebel Marra in South Darfur. Last week, more than 300 new patients were recorded in the locality. Dozens of them died. In Kalma camp, eight people died and more than 200 new cases were reported over the weekend. Parents of students in Kass are calling for a temporary closure of the schools until the cholera epidemic is halted in the area.

"The epidemic is taking its toll among villagers and displaced people in ten densely populated areas in East Jebel Marra," Hussein Abusharati, the spokesman for the Darfur Displaced and Refugees Association, told Radio Dabanga...

Al-Fashir 4 September 2017 - A member of the Legislative Council of the State of North Darfur, Sulaiman Mokhtar Mousi said that similar cases of watery diarrhea appeared in Al-Fasher educational hospital did not specify the quality of the Ministry of Health.

"We appeal to our brothers in the Ministry of Health to focus on the presence of doctors, especially in emergencies and on the days of Eid, many cases of diarrhea, and we wish our brothers in the labs to determine whether they are water showers or not," Suleiman said.
For his part, Director General of the Ministry of Health in the State of North Darfur, Mounir Matar, denied the appearance of any cases of diarrhea in the state. "The diarrhea that came to the hospital is very normal and there are no cases in any of the state hospitals," he told Sudan Tribune.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its bulletin last week that reports from the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed 30,762 cases of watery diarrhea as of August 18, 2017 in various parts of the country, 657 of them since August last year.
The bulletin, based on the ministry and the World Health Organization, predicted that casualty numbers would range from 30-40,000 cases in the next six to nine months.

13 cholera dead in South Darfur capital

Thirteen people died of cholera in a district of Nyala, medical sources reported on Sunday. One of the nearby camps for displaced people is treating ?dozens of infected people?.

The medics and medical volunteers in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, reported the deaths of 13 people and the infection of 91 people in El Wehda district in the southern part of the city.

There are other casualties which have not been counted yet in El Fiteihad, Kararai, and Khartoum Bileil districts in Nyala. ?The situation in Nyala is out of control and poses dangers to the residents.?

A sheikh in El Salam camp for displaced people, south of Nyala, told Radio Dabanga that two people died of cholera, and five others were infected on Saturday.
