HCMC health department proposes declaring measles outbreak
By Le Phuong August 12, 2024 | 08:15 pm PT

The HCMC Department of Health has proposed declaring a measles outbreak in the city and initiating a vaccination campaign after hundreds of cases were confirmed the past months.

"As we wait for the People's Committee to announce the outbreak, the health sector should focus on improving herd immunity to reduce infections and protect children in vulnerable groups, minimizing deaths," Tang Chi Thuong, director of the HCMC health department, said Monday.

HCMC hospitals have recorded 597 fever cases with rashes suspected to be measles since May 23, and 346 of these cases have tested positive for the disease. More than half of the patients came to HCMC from other localities for diagnosis and treatment. In the past month, three children with chronic conditions died due to severe complications from measles.

The HCMC Center for Disease Control (HCDC) reported that measles has been detected in 16 districts, with 25% of the cases being children under nine months old, and the majority of the cases are in children under five years. Notably, 84% of these cases are not fully vaccinated...

Ho Chi Minh City reports 4 measles-related deaths amid rising cases
            Thursday, November 14, 2024, 16:55 GMT+7

Measles cases are surging in Ho Chi Minh City, with four deaths reported among local patients and those transferred from other areas in 2024.

Health authorities are urging vigilance, particularly for unvaccinated children in schools and residential areas.

During the 45th week of this year, from November 4-10, 167 measles cases were recorded among residents in the city, 29 percent higher than the average of the previous four weeks, taking total local infections until then to 1,635 cases, including three deaths, the department said on Wednesday.

From early this year to November 10, the city also treated 2,565 measles cases transferred from other localities, with one of them dying.

During this period, Ho Chi Minh City treated 4,200 patients, with a total of four deaths. The health department partially attributed the rise in cases to unvaccinated students in schools and residential areas.

The agency cited a recent survey as showing that several students at 15 city schools were unvaccinated for measles, despite reports from these schools that all students had been immunized...

Dong Nai Province has reported its first measles-related death of the year: an unvaccinated 8-year-old boy who succumbed to severe pneumonia complications.

According to the Dong Nai Department of Health on November 18, the deceased was H.T.H., an 8-year-old boy from Tam Hoa Ward, Bien Hoa City. The boy had not been vaccinated against measles.

On November 15, H. was taken to Dong Nai Children's Hospital by his family after experiencing persistent high fever, coughing, nasal congestion, and a full-body rash.

Doctors diagnosed him with measles and its complications, including pneumonia, conjunctivitis, and enteritis, and recommended hospitalization.

However, after receiving antibiotics, the family requested to discharge him from the hospital.

At home, H.'s condition worsened, with escalating symptoms of high fever, severe coughing, and difficulty breathing. The family gave him ginger water but did not return him to the hospital.

On the morning of November 17, H. entered a critical state, showing signs of cyanosis and unresponsiveness. Though the family called for an ambulance, the boy succumbed to cardiac and respiratory arrest before reaching the hospital. His death was attributed to severe pneumonia caused by measles complications.

The Dong Nai Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports nearly 1,900 cases of measles have been recorded province-wide since the beginning of the year...
