    ​The World Health Organization reported that Afghanistan has seen 18,744 suspected cases of measles, including 94 deaths, since the beginning of 2024.

    According to the WHO, 80.5% of these suspected cases, or 15,096, were among children under five, and 45.1%, or 8,462, were females.

    The organization’s report highlighted that Balkh province had the highest cumulative incidence of suspected measles, with 14.6 cases per 10,000 people. This was followed by Samangan with 14.3, Khost with 11.3, and Farah with 10.3.​..

    •The epidemiological curve of suspected measles cases has shown an increase this week, reversing the modest downward trend observed over the previous four weeks, which needs close monitoring (Figures 1 & 2).

    •During week 17-2024, a total of 1,569 suspected cases and 4 associated deaths were reported. This represents a 19.2% increase in the number of suspected measles cases compared to the preceding week.​...

      Measles cases drop in Afghanistan in November

      The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a more than 10% decrease in the number of confirmed measles cases in Afghanistan in November 2024 compared to the previous month.

      In a statement issued on Sunday, December 29, the WHO announced that 3,482 new measles cases had been recorded in Afghanistan during November 2024.

      According to the WHO, 12 people infected with measles have died in Afghanistan during this month.

      Previously, the WHO had reported an increase in measles cases in Afghanistan earlier this year.

      Based on WHO statistics, a total of 36,326 suspected measles cases and 160 related deaths have been recorded in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year.

      However, the Ministry of Public Health of the Taliban has recently announced that the necessary budget for the measles vaccination campaign has been secured, and a nationwide public vaccination campaign will begin next year.​..
