    Montreal Public Health says there have been 14 confirmed cases of measles in the city since the beginning of February, with only two believed to have been acquired abroad, suggesting local transmission.

    These cases have exposed several thousand individuals in various settings in Montreal, including various health-care environments, the health agency said in an update Wednesday.

    A complete list of locations where exposure may have occurred has been published online. The list includes pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, Metro lines, daycare centres, pediatric ERs and hospitals...

            Despite the rise in measles cases, Montreal Public Health is optimistic

            The Montreal DRSP offers people who are not immunized against measles and in contact with a case to be vaccinated quickly so as not to contract the disease.

            ...
            “It’s difficult to predict what will happen. But I am hopeful that we will be able to contain this outbreak which is currently taking place in Montreal in the coming days, in the coming weeks,” says Dr. Paul Le Guerrier, medical manager of immunization and preventive diseases by the vaccination at the DRSP in Montreal.
            ...
            At the Montreal DRSP, around thirty employees are mobilized to investigate the cases, determine the places frequented by them and draw up a list of their contacts. A race against time similar to that experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic , measles being extremely contagious.

            “We join the contacts in order of priority,” specifies Dr. Le Guerrier. As the disease mainly affects young children and pregnant women, we prioritize reaching children under 1 year old, pregnant women and immunosuppressed people. » Next come children aged 1 to 4 and the rest of the population.

            The Montreal DRSP offers people who are not immunized against measles and in contact with a case to be vaccinated quickly so as not to contract the disease. “As the incubation period is on average 7 to 14 days, if we succeed in vaccinating people very soon after they have been exposed, there is approximately an 80, 83 or 85% chance that “We prevent the development of measles, according to the [scientific] literature,” indicates Dr. Le Guerrier.

            The administration of immunoglobulins containing antibodies against measles also helps protect those who cannot receive vaccines, such as pregnant women, he adds.
            ...
            Since Monday, Montreal CIUSSS have also been carrying out a vaccination campaign against measles in schools. The CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal has so far vaccinated around a hundred students and four adults. Its vaccination operation, which targets 21 schools, will end on April 4.

            The CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal also began vaccination on Monday in schools in its territory. It indicates that it favors schools which have “vaccination coverage of less than 75% and which have 100 or more students to be vaccinated”.

            The Laval DRSP, for its part, is not planning a vaccination campaign against measles in schools. At least for the moment. “We have fairly high coverage,” says the regional public health director, Dr. Jean -Pierre Trépanier. At primary and secondary levels, average coverage is around 88%. Of course, this is below the 95% that we are aiming for to achieve collective immunity, but there are no big differences between schools. The vast majority are between 85% and 95%. »

            The DRSP of Laval is instead banking on a vaccination recovery campaign by telephone. She contacts the families of unvaccinated children to offer them vaccination against measles. A strategy used two years ago and which worked well, according to Dr. Trépanier . “We had increased our vaccination coverage by 3% at the time,” he explains.

            Remember that measles is caught by breathing the same air as an infected person, even at a distance of more than 2 meters (6 feet). The virus can survive for a few hours suspended in the air and disperse. If an unprotected person is in contact with a sick person, the risk of catching measles is 9 out of 10, according to the Montreal DRSP.

            This disease manifests itself by fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis as well as spots or redness on the skin. It can lead to ear infections, pneumonia, loss of vision or hearing, brain infection and even death.

            There is no treatment for measles. Young children, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems are especially prone to developing serious symptoms. The best way to protect yourself against the disease is to get vaccinated, health authorities say.

                  Measles in Montérégie: now 9 cases reported

                  April 10, 2024 at 9:07 a.m.

                  By Daniel Bastin

                  No cases of measles were reported in Montérégie at the beginning of March, but in April there were now nine cases of this very contagious disease in the region.

                  As of April 9, 43 confirmed cases of measles have been reported since the start of the year across the province. After Montreal (17 cases recorded), Montérégie is the most affected, because the other regions have 5 cases declared or less (Laval, Laurentides, Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec, Lanaudière as well as Estrie).

                  The Montérégie Public Health Department (DSPM) recalled that this disease is very contagious. A person can catch it if they have been in the same room as another person who has had measles.

                  The DSPM clarified that measles has already been widespread in North America. It has become rarer because of the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns. Its first symptoms are fever; nasal congestion with runny nose; cough; conjunctivitis (red, runny eyes); eyes sensitive to light; generalized discomfort. Subsequently, redness appears on the face, then on the body.

                  We add that it can take 10 to 14 days (exceptionally up to 21 days) between exposure to the virus and the start of symptoms, i.e. the incubation period. A person begins to be contagious 4 days before the rash appears and can remain contagious for up to 4 days after their appearance. Measles lasts 1 to 2 weeks.

                  Possible complications of measles are: otitis (5 to 9% of cases); persistent diarrhea, especially in infants; pneumonia (1 to 5% of cases); convulsions (the body stiffens and the muscles contract jerkily and involuntarily); loss of vision or hearing; permanent brain damage (1 in 1,000 cases); death (1 in 3,000 cases).

                  Among the places and dates of possible exposure to a case of measles in Montérégie, we note that there is the Honoré-Mercier Hospital, March 25 between 11:45 a.m. and 9:01 p.m. and April 5 between 4:45 p.m. and 9 p.m., as well as the Winners located at 500, boulevard Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier in Beloeil, on March 25 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.; March 26 between 12:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; March 27 between 12:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; March 28 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. and March 29 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

                    A person with measles was on board a flight from Turkey that landed in Montreal on April 3, the Quebec Health Ministry and public health authorities have confirmed.

                    The person was on board Turkish Airlines flight TK35, that landed at 6 p.m. at Pierre-Elliot-Trudeau Airport.

                    Authorities have indicated that people on this flight may have been exposed to measles. Travellers or staff who were at the airport in the arrivals and baggage area on April 3, between 6 p.m. and 12.30 a.m., may also have been exposed.

                    They are considered measles contacts cases by Quebec public health...

                      Quebec successfully pushes back against rise in measles cases
                      Some schools with low vaccination rate were brought up to 90%: public health
                      CBC News · Posted: Apr 18, 2024 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: April 18

                      Quebec appears to be winning its battle against the rising tide of measles after 45 cases were confirmed province-wide this year.

                      "We've had no locally transmitted measles cases since March 25, so that's good news," said Dr. Paul Le Guerrier, responsible for immunization for Montreal Public Health.

                      There are 17 patients with measles in Quebec currently, and the most recent case is somebody who was infected while abroad, he said.

                      But it was no small task to get to this point.

                      Le Guerrier said once local transmission was detected, news was spread fast among health centres to ensure proper protocols were followed — such as not letting potentially infected people sit in waiting rooms for hours on end.

                      Then about 90 staffers were put to work, tracking down those who were in contact with positive cases and are not properly vaccinated. They were given post-exposure prophylaxis, which prevents disease, said Le Guerrier...

                        Montreal Public Health reports 2nd measles case this month
                        Last month, health officials declared end to an outbreak that began during winter

                        Montreal Public Health is warning of a measles case which has exposed travellers at the Pierre-Eliott-Trudeau International Airport.

                        The infected person was on board an Air Transat flight, TS403, from Rome that landed in Montreal on July 8 at 3:30 p.m.

                        This is the second measles case caught abroad that Montreal public health authorities confirmed since declaring the end of an outbreak in the city last month.

                        Last Friday, officials said a traveller who caught the measles during a trip to Africa was on board the Delta Airlines flight DL9288 from Amsterdam that landed in Montreal on July 3.

                        Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease, and its spread has become rarer because of immunization campaigns. The best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated against it.

                        Authorities say travellers and staff who were at the arrivals and baggage section of the Trudeau airport between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on July 8 may have come in contact with the infected person from the Air Transat flight.

                        The next day, the person carrying measles reportedly visited two stores in the Montreal area.

                        Public health officials say you have been exposed to measles if you were at the Prima Goccia store in Montréal-Nord between 10:25 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the Nour FX currency exchange office in Saint-Michel between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

                        Since the start of 2024, 51 measles cases have been reported in the province, according to the Quebec Health Ministry...

                              Epidemiology

                              Quebec is facing its 2nd measles outbreak in 2024. This outbreak began in December 2024 and is still ongoing. Fewer than 5 cases have been reported as of December 30, 2024. The first outbreak of the year occurred in early 2024, included 51 cases and ended on June 5, 2024. A few sporadic cases were reported between the two outbreaks.

                              Measles is present worldwide, particularly in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Large outbreaks have occurred in several European countries and in some states in the United States in recent years. In 2023 and 2024, cases of measles were reported in several Canadian provinces, including Quebec.

                              People at risk

                              Some people are at greater risk of complications if they contract measles. If exposed to the virus, these people should contact Info-Santé 811 quickly to be evaluated and receive preventive treatment if necessary. The latter consists of an injection of antibodies that must be administered within seven days of the date of exposure.
                              People at risk of complications are:
                              • babies under one year old;
                              • people with weakened immune systems;
                              • pregnant people who are not adequately vaccinated against measles.
                              Persons considered protected

                              People considered protected against measles are:
                              • people born before 1970;
                              • persons with serology demonstrating the presence of antibodies against measles;
                              • persons with a medical certificate confirming that they had measles before 1 January 1996;
                              • persons with written proof of measles vaccination.
                              There are several vaccines against measles. List of trade names of measles vaccines can help you spot them in your vaccination proof.
                              The number of doses required to consider people protected varies:
                              • 2 doses:
                                • people born from 1980;
                                • people born between 1970 and 1979 who are health care interns, health care workers, military recruits or who plan to travel outside Canada.
                              • 1 dose:
                                • persons born between 1970 and 1979 who are neither health care interns, health care workers nor military recruits and who do not plan to travel outside Canada;
                                • Pregnant persons born between 1970 and 1979 who have had only one dose of measles vaccine should receive immunoglobulin following significant exposure.
                              If you are not considered protected, it is possible to make an appointment to receive the vaccine on the Clic Santé website or by calling 1 877 644-4545 . Measles vaccination is available at local service points in several regions of Quebec.

                              People wishing to obtain information on vaccination status can contact their CLSC, their local service point or call 1 877 644-4545 .

                              Measures to be taken by exposed persons

                              If you are protected against measles, it is very unlikely that you will contract the disease. As a precaution, we recommend that you monitor yourself for symptoms of measles until the date that corresponds to your situation (see the section Places and dates of possible exposure to a case of measles ).
                              If you are not protected against measles, it is recommended to:
                              • isolate yourself at home from the 5th day after your first exposure to measles and up to and including the 14th day after your last exposure. (You are not contagious for 4 days after the first exposure ) ;

                                For example, if you were exposed on March 4 and 10, you should isolate from March 9 to 24, inclusive.
                              • get vaccinated. A vaccine or injection of antibodies against the disease may be recommended for you;
                              • monitor for symptoms until the date that corresponds to your situation (see the section Places and dates of possible exposure to a case of measles ).
                              To learn about the symptoms of measles and what to do if you have symptoms, visit the Measles page .

                              The antibody injection provides immediate protection if given within seven days of contact with an infectious person. It could be recommended for people at risk .

                              The vaccine is for people 6 months of age and older who are not considered protected against measles and who have been in contact with an infectious person. It can be effective in preventing the disease if given within 72 hours of contact.

                              You may be able to lift your isolation if you receive a dose of vaccine that causes you to be considered protected against measles .

                              If you are a health care worker, notify your health unit or employer. Specific requirements may apply to your situation.

                              If you attend a school environment, you will receive instructions specific to your situation.

                              In certain situations, if you are one of those at risk, you may be contacted by the Public Health Department in your region for more details on the recommendations to follow.

                              To receive the vaccine, it is possible to make an appointment on the Clic Santé website or by phone at 1 877 644-4545 . Measles vaccination is available at local service points in several regions of Quebec.

                              People in contact with exposed people do not need to isolate or restrict their contacts.
