    American Samoa confirms a case of measles

    Daycare centres have been shut down in American Samoa following confirmation of an eight-year-old girl with measles.

    The territory's Department of Health (DOH) said samples from the child, who was seen at a community centre with symptoms on 27 March, were sent for testing in California and returned positive.

    Day cares are now closed to protect babies from being exposed to the virus, as infants under six months are not eligible for the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

    Kanana Fou Elementary School in Tafuna, where the girl attends, has also been closed...

    American Samoa is on high alert with 29 suspected meals cases now reported after last week's confirmation of the territory's first case.

    On Sunday night local time Director of Health Motusa Tuileama Nua said the suspected cases were in various locations across Tutuila, the largest island in the territory.

    On Tuesday last week health officials confirmed that an eight year old girl who was seen at a community center with symptoms on March 27 had tested positive for meals...

        American Samoa confirms second case of measles

        PAGO PAGO (RNZ Pacific/Pacnews) — A second case of measles has been confirmed in American Samoa after lab results came back.

        The second confirmed case is a four-year-old boy from Tafuna who goes to the same school as the first confirmed measles case.

        The Department of Health sent 39 samples to Hawaii for testing on Monday and 26 came back negative while one was positive for measles.

        The samples are both nasal swabs and serum - the nasal swabs tested negative, but the serum samples have to be sent to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lab as Hawaii didn't have the capability for serum testing...​

          Suspected measles cases rise to 49 in American Samoa

          American Samoa has confirmed its second case of meals, a four-year-old boy, and now has 49 probable cases.

          The boy, from Tafuna, goes to the same school as the eight-year-old girl who was the first confirmed case announced on 18 April in the US territory, three weeks after she was seen at a community center with symptoms on March 27.

          All 49 probable cases to date are in children aged from two months to 13 years...​
