Congo-Brazzaville tries to control the measles epidemic

While measles has killed more than 130 Congolese since the beginning of the year, the authorities are preparing to launch a massive vaccination campaign.

The response is preparing. Faced with outbreaks of measles since the beginning of the year, Congo-Brazzaville wants to launch a vaccination campaign for children aged 6 months to 9 years throughout the territory. Good news when you know that this disease has killed at least 132 Congolese since the beginning of the year. According to the Ministry of Health, the department of Pointe-Noire, the country's economic capital, is the epicenter of the epidemic with 5,488 notified cases including 112 deaths.

At the end of April, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef warned of the appearance of "major epidemic outbreaks" of measles, yellow fever and a variant of poliomyelitis in around twenty African countries. Between January and March of this year, Africa even witnessed a 400% increase in measles cases.

Faced with this situation, the Congolese government wants to avoid the worst. "From July 30 to August 5, 2022, we will launch this response which will target children aged 6 months to 9 years. The objective of this campaign is to reach 95% of targeted children, i.e. 1,243,000 children, by implementing several strategies" , explains Dr. Alexis Mourou Moyoka, medical colonel, pediatrician and head of the Extended Vaccination Program (EPI) in the Republic of Congo.

          Low vaccination coverage

The resurgence of measles was anticipated by many observers, given that vaccination campaigns have been disrupted since the appearance of Covid-19 on African soil. In 2020, the WHO estimated that at least 22 million newborns had not been vaccinated against this highly contagious disease. Same story in Congo, where "the occurrence of the health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a drop in national vaccination coverage to 73% in 2020" , specifies Dr Mourou.

This future campaign to respond to the measles epidemic is organized in an integrated manner with the mass preventive campaign against yellow fever. This targets all children aged 9 months to 60 years, and will take place in the 52 health districts of the Congo .

Alors que la rougeole a tué plus de 130 Congolais depuis le début de l'année, les autorités s'apprêtent à lancer une campagne de vaccination massive.
