    Measles occurred in eastern Slovakia
Four teenagers from Michalovce are reportedly infected with measles; doctors ascribe this to a low vaccination rate in some areas.

The Public Health Authority (?VZ) branch in the town of Michalovce (Ko?ice Region, eastern Slovakia) has reported that four people aged 12-19 are suffering from measles, the Sme daily wrote on May 28.

In three cases, the disease was traced back to the UK, while one person was infected in Slovakia. None of the four children were vaccinated against measles.

The cases were reported between May 7 and 24, said the main public health officer in Slovakia, J?n Mikas, as quoted by the daily. The Public Health Authority noted that none of the teenagers have been vaccinated and three of them arrived form the UK already infected. ?VZ also claims it adopted measures to prevent the spreading of this infectious disease.

?Last week, eight more cases (after two previous confirmed instances) were detected, which are probably measles, too,? Jana Fed?kov?, communication official of the Svet Zdravia hospital network, told Sme. She added that they must wait for test results to confirm the suspicion. In total, 11 patients have been isolated so far in the Michalovce hospital...

Measles return to Slovakia after 20 years

Nearly 60 people, including two nurses, are the result of the latest measles epidemic that occurred in the district of Michalovce. Since it belongs among highly contagious viruses, it is possible the number will keep increasing.

?Due to the high infectiousness of measles and the transmission of the disease by air, more cases might occur in eastern Slovakia,? Da?a Račkov?, spokesperson for the Public Health Authority (?VZ), told The Slovak Spectator...

              Measles spread to other districts
Towns and hospitals adopt preventive measures.

Measles continue to spread in eastern Slovakia, surpassing the Michalovce district borders. The laboratory tests confirmed that a child from Trebi?ov is suffering from the disease, Jana Fed?kov?, spokesperson for the Svet Zdravia network of hospitals, informed on July 24.

The child with the disease was coming from the local Roma settlement, and was previously living in Michalovce, where the first measles cases occurred.

At the same time, she confirmed that a child from Vranov nad Topľou is also suffering from measles. These two are the new localities in the Lower Zempl?n region where the disease has occurred, the TASR newswire reported.

Both children were transported to the Michalovce hospital last week, with one undergoing outpatient treatment and the other being hospitalised.

?The laboratory tests confirmed the disease in both cases,? Fed?kov? said, as quoted by TASR.

In addition, there is one suspicion reported in Ro?ňava. Svet Zdravia is currently waiting for the test results as the clinical signs are unclear, she added.

Currently, 15 patients are hospitalised in Michalovce, five of them admitted during July 24. Since the beginning of the epidemic, the hospital has hospitalised altogether 220 patients, while another 80 underwent outpatient treatment, TASR reported...

Measles emergencies called off in Michalovce district
The measles epidemic seems to be almost over, with state of emergency called off.

An emergency state announced in response to a measles outbreak that was in place for around one month in the Michalovce district (Košice Region, eastern Slovakia) has been cancelled due to a significant drop in new cases, Michalovce District Office superintendent, Jana Cibereov?, told the TASR newswire.

She said so after a session of the emergency committee on August 13.

Cibereov? noted that while 30 new cases of measles were recorded in the district over a single weekend a month ago, there were only eight new cases over the past weekend, while there were also days last week on which there were no new occurrences...
