Outbreak of measles in the Waikato, others may be at risk

          Last updated 14:13, April 12 2016

A Waikato person who contracted measles while on an overseas trip has passed the disease on to at least two others, prompting health authorities to issue a warning that many more people are at risk.

One of the three who were affected attended Nga Taiatea Wharekura school while infectious but before becoming unwell. The school has been informed and is working with the Waikato District Health Board's Population Health to control the spread of the disease.

It is unknown whether the infectious person was a student or employed by the school.

During their infectious periods, the three infected people also attended Waikato Hospital's emergency department respectively on Friday, March 25; Monday, April 4; and Saturday, April 9.

Medical Officer of Health Felicity Dumble said anyone who attended the hospital's emergency department on those dates might have been exposed to measles...

Health authorities have warned that performers and spectators who attended a kapa haka event in Hamilton could be at risk of contracting measles.

There have been five infections in the region ? two serious enough to be hospitalised.

The Waikato District Health Board said a person with measles alerted it that they attended the Tainui Waka Cultural Festival on Saturday at the Claudelands Event Centre while they were infectious but before they became unwell.

"This means those attending the event who are not immune are at risk of getting measles and passing it on to others," the DHB said.

A staff member at Waikato Hospital has contracted measles and had been working in the hospital while infectious but prior to developing any symptoms. The DHB has contacted all patients and staff who may have been exposed to the staff member while infectious at work.

This staff member was vaccinated against measles. For those who receive two doses, the measles vaccine provides effective protection in more than 95 per cent of cases. This was a rare case when the vaccine has not provided sufficient protection.

All Waikato DHB staff are being asked to check their measles (MMR) vaccination status, especially those who work in clinical areas and those employed before July 2015. The DHB has had a vaccination policy in place since July 2015 for all new staff to be vaccinated for MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis.

There have now been nine confirmed cases in the Waikato since early April, with another three under investigation...

Waikato District Health Board?s Population Health Service has asked students and staff at Morrinsville College to ensure they are immunised against measles, after a student was reported to the DHB with the virus.

"We have been notified that a student at Morrinsville College has measles and therefore students and staff may have been exposed to this infection, and they should look out for symptoms," says Medical Officer of Health Dr Richard Wall.

The DHB has written to the school advising all staff and students who do not have documented immunity to measles (such as having not had two doses of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine), that they must stay at home in quarantine until Tuesday 24 May. The College has decided to close on Monday 16 May until staff and students have checked their immunisation status.

The Waikato District Health Board Population Health Service says that so far there are 20 confirmed cases of measles in the Waikato and 12 are under investigation...

The Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service has confirmed a second case of measles in Nelson.

The new case is related to the first, when a Nelson teenager was confirmed as having the highly infectious virus last week after returning from a trip to Hamilton.

They were one of the four people in isolation who had been in contact with the first case and who had been determined to be non-immune to measles.

The other three people have since come out of isolation having not developed any symptoms...
