    Measles case in Racine
    Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 12:07 PM
    By Brian Moon

This latest confirmed measles case in Wisconsin is a fifth grader at SC Johnson Elementary School. Stephanie Kratochvil-Hayden, spokeswoman for the Racine Unified School District, says the illness was confirmed late Monday by city health officials.

Kratochvil-Hayden says on Tuesday morning all of the school's staff was notified, and parents are being contacted about the sick child. The district is waiting for direction from Racine health officials on the next step of this case.

Four cases of measles were confirmed earlier this month in the Milwaukee area. Until then the state had not seen any cases of measles since 2005.

More Measles Cases in Racine County

The Western Racine County Health Department says it's now investigating several suspected cases of measles in the county. That would be additional cases to the one suspected case already announced in a 5th grade student at SC Johnson School.

Previously the state of Wisconsin had confirmed seven likely cases of the disease and one case of rubella. Only one of those cases was in Racine County.

The Western Racine County Health Department is planning to offer free immunizations Thursday, April 25th from 4-6 in the afternoon at its location at 156 East State Street in Burlington.

While Racine says there are several suspected new cases, the state of Wisconsin says it still only knows of seven probable cases, the same as earlier this week.
