Four children suffering from measles were recommended for admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital last Thursday, but three of them have died. The surviving child, Jannatul Mawa, was admitted to the ICU on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, three more children have been recommended for ICU admission.

A total of 12 children have died at Rajshahi Medical College this month after contracting measles. Among them, nine died despite being admitted to the ICU. Detailed information on infected children in general wards is yet to be obtained.

With assistance from the World Health Organisation, samples from 153 patients in Rajshahi division were tested on March 18, with 44 testing positive for measles. The infection rate was approximately 29 per cent, with the highest rates in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi and Pabna.

The office of the Rajshahi Divisional Health Director said this highly contagious disease has spread rapidly in the Rajshahi region. Between March 1 and Thursday, 84 children with measles were recommended for ICU admission. Among them, nine died in the ICU and three died while awaiting ICU admission.

In Pabna, 26 children were undergoing treatment in the 'measles ward' as of this morning, though no deaths have been reported. Four children have died in Chapainawabganj over the last three months; 70 children were admitted to hospital there this morning...

Rising Measles Infections: 105 Children Admitted in 11 Days, Three Deaths

    Published: 28 Mar 2026, 08:53 pm

A sharp rise in measles infections among children has placed significant pressure on healthcare services at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where overcrowding and resource constraints are increasingly evident. Over the past 11 days alone, 105 children have been admitted with measles, and three fatalities have been recorded, underscoring growing concerns among public health officials.

The surge began in mid-March and has since intensified, with patients arriving not only from Mymensingh district but also from neighbouring regions including Sherpur, Jamalpur, Netrokona, Tangail, Kurigram, Kishoreganj, and parts of Gazipur. In response, hospital authorities established three dedicated medical teams on 24 March and set up specialised “measles corners” within the paediatric wards. Each of these units was designed to accommodate 10 patients; however, the influx has far exceeded capacity.

At least three children have died of measles in Chandpur as the outbreak continues to grow, with 22 infected children currently receiving treatment at Chandpur Sadar General Hospital.

According to the Civil Surgeon’s Office, a total of 28 children have been admitted to different hospitals across the district due to measles. The three deaths have caused concern among parents in the area.

Latest health department data shows that Chandpur Sadar General Hospital has the largest number of patients, with 22 children under treatment. In addition, Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex is treating seven children, Matlab North Upazila three, and Kachua Upazila two children.

A 10-bed isolation ward has been opened at Chandpur Sadar General Hospital for measles patients, but the facility has become insufficient due to the rising number of cases. Hospital sources said the pressure has led to a shortage of beds, forcing some children to receive care on the ward floor...

At least 56 of the 64 districts have reported measles cases as of March 28, officials said citing reports from both the government and the World Health Organisation -- indicating widespread national transmission of the infectious disease.

The number of affected districts could be higher as new cases may have been reported from eight additional districts since the WHO report was submitted to the health authorities on March 28, officials said.

Considering the ratio of population to suspected cases, Cox’s Bazar recorded the highest burden of patients. Barguna, Chapainawabganj, Pabna and Natore, as well as Dhaka North City Corporation, Mymensingh City Corporation and Barishal City Corporation, have emerged as hotspots, they added.

A total of 2,373 suspected measles cases were tested until Wednesday, of which 743, or around 31 percent, tested positive so far, said Halimur Rashid, director (disease control) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

However, a DGHS report said a total of 3,709 suspected measles cases were recorded from March 15 until 8:00am yesterday, including 685 reported in the last 24 hours. Of them, 585 cases were confirmed as measles patients.

A total of 27 suspected measles deaths were recorded, including four in the last 24 hours until 8:00am yesterday, and of them, 13 are confirmed measles deaths, the report said.
