CDPH Urges Vaccination as New Measles Cases Reported in Sacramento Region

      March 5, 2026

CDPH working with counties to assess exposures related to five recent cases in the Sacramento region

What You Need to Know: Six recent cases of measles have been reported in Placer and Sacramento counties. This represents the third outbreak of measles in California in 2026. Public health officials are investigating additional suspect cases across multiple jurisdictions and working to notify people who may have been exposed. With this news and measles spreading in other parts of the United States and the world, CDPH is strongly urging Californians to ensure they are fully vaccinated against measles.

SACRAMENTO The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is urging Californians to get vaccinated against measles after local health departments in Placer and Sacramento counties have notified the state of multiple recent cases. To avoid spreading measles to your community, CDPH strongly recommends that unvaccinated individuals exposed to measles stay at home, and that those who have symptoms of measles call their health care provider for guidance on testing and care.

In late February, Sacramento County reported a measles case in an unvaccinated toddler who had recently traveled to an area in South Carolina with an ongoing measles outbreak. Placer County then identified measles cases in three siblings from a different household who had direct contact with the toddler. These four cases represent the third outbreak of measles in California in 2026.

On March 4, a fifth case was reported by Sacramento County to CDPH in a child from the same community who attended an educational enrichment program where as many as 130 children may have been exposed to the child while they were infectious.

On March 5, Placer County reported a sixth case in another unvaccinated child from a different household within the same community.

“Measles, one of the most contagious infections, can lead to severe life-long consequences including permanent brain damage and can also be fatal, especially for children,” said  Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer. “The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and provides long-lasting protection against measles. Vaccination protects both our own families and those who are too young to be fully vaccinated.”

Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97 percent effective at stopping illness. In the current outbreak in South Carolina, measles cases spread quickly in unvaccinated communities, often within individual families, groups of homeschooled children and religious communities with low rates of vaccination.

CDPH is working with county health officials in Placer and Sacramento counties, as well as other counties across the region, to notify people who may have been exposed. The leaders of the educational enrichment program have agreed to voluntarily close the facility temporarily.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego County public health officials said people may have been exposed to measles at a local hospital last week.

On Wednesday, the county sent out a notification to the community, saying anyone who was at the Sharp Memorial Hospital emergency room on Frost Street in San Diego may have been exposed to measles.

The date of possible exposure was last Wednesday, March 11.

Officials said an adult visiting from outside of California who was not vaccinated against measles visited the emergency room that day during the infectious period and was evaluated for fever. However, they had no other symptoms associated with measles.

The individual later tested positive for measles, according to public health officials.

“Anyone who received care or accompanied someone at the Sharp Memorial Hospital Emergency Department between 11:22 a.m. and 4:35 p.m. is urged to contact County Public Health Services at (866) 358-2966 as soon as possible,” the county said...

'Breakthrough' measles case brings Shasta total to 10

A tenth measles case was identified in Shasta County, which the California public health officials called a "breakthrough case."

A press release from the Health and Human Services agency said "the case is contained and risk to the community is low." No exposure sites were identified, and none of the previous exposure sites are "considered active." The case is being called a breakthrough case because the individual had received one dose of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.

Staff are currently conducting contact tracing, as well as investigating "a possible connection to previous Shasta County measles cases in Jan. and Feb."

This is the first measles case identified in Shasta County in the month of March, and the third in California, with two more identified in Placer and Sacramento counties this month.

The press release stated that the patient is under the age of 18, is "past their 8-day infectious period and able to return to their normal activities." Close contacts of the patient are in quarantine in case they develop symptoms...

What public health thought was a tenth measles case in Shasta County in 2026 turned out to be a misdiagnosis, the agency said.

A measles confirmation test administered to a patient — originally identified as having measles on March 23 — came back negative for the disease, Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.

"As a result, the Shasta County measles outbreak, first identified Jan. 30, ended on March 30," the agency reported, and "the county’s final measles case count so far this year is nine."

The nine people with confirmed measles cases in 2026 fully recovered from the highly contagious illness, public health said in the announcement...

For Immediate Release: April 30, 2026

Confirmed Measles Case in Orange County
(Santa Ana, CA) – The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) received confirmation of a measles case in an infant who had history of international travel. The HCA is notifying individuals who were exposed to the person in health care and other settings.

“Measles is highly contagious. Anyone planning domestic or international travel—or hosting visitors—should be fully vaccinated at least two weeks beforehand. Infants less than a year old who are traveling internationally should receive one dose of MMR vaccine before departure. Adults and others who are not immune remain at risk, especially as outbreaks continue across the country and worldwide,” said Dr. Anissa Davis, Deputy County Health Officer. “Vaccination is the best protection.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have already been 1,792 confirmed measles cases in the United States in 2026. By comparison, 2025 saw 2,267 cases, the highest annual total in more than 30 years. This is the third case of measles in Orange County in 2026...

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed its fifth measles case of the year. The person flew into LAX on Thursday, May 14.

Why now: The resident was traveling internationally and arrived at Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B) at LAX on May 14 via Alaska Airlines Flight 1354, departing from Guatemala City. Anyone in the terminal between 6 and 8 a.m. that morning may have been exposed.

What's next: Public health officials say passengers seated near the infected traveler will be notified by their respective local health departments. They are working to find additional exposure sites that the traveler visited in L.A. County.

What you should do: If you were at LAX during that time, officials say you should check your vaccination status...

County public health officials have confirmed two unrelated cases of measles.

Both people who got sick travel to San Diego for work. One of the cases involved public exposure.

Health officials say the infectious person, who did not have proof of measles vaccination, spent time at these locations:
                      • Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina located at 333 W Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101  on May 17, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
                      • Baskin Robbins located at 791 Palm Ave. Suite 103, Imperial Beach, CA 91932 on May 20 between 5 and 7:30 p.m.

County Immunization staff are working with the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina to identify and follow up with potentially exposed employees, and notifications are also being sent to guests who were on site during those times.
“Measles spreads very easily, even through the air, so anyone who was at these locations during the listed times should watch for symptoms and contact their health care provider if they start to feel sick,” said Sayone Thihalolipavan, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

People with symptoms are asked to call their healthcare provider before arriving so that infection control measures can be put in place.

Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash one to four days later. People are contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears.

The best prevention against measles is vaccination. With outbreaks reported in several states, officials urge everyone to ensure they are fully vaccinated, especially travelers. Infants between 6 and 12 months of age who travel should get one dose. Anyone over 12 months who travels should receive two doses at least four weeks apart.

Complications are more common in children younger than 5 years old and adults 20 years and older. Severe cases can be life-threatening. There is no medicine that cures measles, but people who develop complications may need medical care tailored to those issues.

The second case of measles did not result in public exposure.

In March, the County reported one measles case in an out-of-state visitor. No additional local cases have been reported this year. Statewide, the California Department of Public Health has confirmed 49 cases so far this year.

For more information about measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, please contact the County’s Immunization Branch at (866) 358-2966 or visit the website at www.sdiz.org.
