By Kassidy Arena , Senior Reporter Nebraska Public Media News
    May 27, 2025, 9:38 a.m. ·

Nebraska health officials have confirmed the state's first measles case in almost a decade.

The case was reported to the Panhandle Public Health District, which covers 12 counties in the western region of the state, as well as the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

PPHD Health Director Jessica Davies said in a written statement the confirmed measles case is in an "age-appropriately vaccinated child" in Sheridan County.

The department said some people may have been exposed at the Family Dollar in Rushville on May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and on May 21 at the Gordon Clinic from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Davies said people with known exposure have already been notified, but those who think they may have been exposed can visit www.pphd.ne.gov to complete a risk assessment survey or call 308-633-2866...

COLUMBUS, Neb. — A second measles case has been confirmed in Platte County.

The East Central District Health Department announced Wednesday that a household member of the first measles case, which was announced Tuesday, has also been confirmed to have the disease. A news release says the new patient is also unvaccinated.

The health department says there are no new exposure sites related to the second case. The existing exposure sites are:

    • Shell Creek Baptist Church, Columbus, NE, on December 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

    • Columbus Community Hospital Emergency Department, Columbus, NE, on December 29 from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

The two Platte County measles cases are the second and third confirmed cases in Nebraska in 2025. Before this year, the state hadn’t had a measles case since 2017...

Platte County now up to four cases of measles
By Matt Olberding , News director Nebraska Public Media
      Jan. 5, 2026, 4:45 p.m. ·

Platte County is now up to four cases of measles diagnosed in the past week, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday.

All four cases are in the same household, and the department said two of the cases are currently active. It said there has so far been no evidence of community spread, even though there was the possibility of community exposure at two different locations in Columbus.

The department had earlier said the first two cases diagnosed were in unvaccinated children. It did not provide any details about the latest two cases, citing privacy concerns.

The cases bring the number diagnosed in Nebraska to five in the past eight months. In May, a vaccinated child in Sheridan County contracted the disease, and there were no other known cases. That case was the first one reported in the state in eight years...
