    Halifax adult contracts measles after U.S. travel; first case in N.S. since 2023

    HALIFAX — Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health says an adult in Halifax contracted measles after they travelled to the U.S.

    The case is the first recorded measles infection in the province since 2023.

    Dr. Robert Strang told a news conference today the individual had the standard single dose of vaccine, but not a second shot, which he said is now considered necessary for full immunization.​..

    ​Two confirmed case of measles has popped up in the Pictou County.

    Nova Scotia Health says there are more contacts sick with measles-like symptoms but not yet confirmed cases.

    They are working to find out the source, but they believe the cases come from people travelling within Canada to a region with known measles cases.

    If you were at the Aberdeen Hospital emergency department in New Glasgow Saturday evening between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., you may have been exposed.

    Or, you could have been exposed at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Emergency Department on Saturday between. 10:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.

    Anyone who was there should watch for symptoms.​..

      ​HALIFAX — A measles outbreak Nova Scotia has risen to 30 cases in a northern part of the province with a low vaccination rate, health officials said Thursday.

      All 30 cases originated from travel within Canada to regions where measles is known to be circulating, Nova Scotia Public Health said. The agency had reported a single case on July 7 in the northern zone.

      Dr. Ryan Sommers, senior medical director of public health, said the new cases mainly involve large households and specific, small communities whose members are in close contact with one another.

      “The risk to the general public is still considered low at this time,” he told a media briefing Thursday afternoon.​..

        Measles outbreak in Nova Scotia rises to 35 cases

        Health officials in Nova Scotia say the measles outbreak in the province’s northern zone has risen by five cases to 35.

        Officials area also issuing two public exposure warnings.

        One warning is for the Kennetcook area, also in the northern health zone, where they say the public may have been exposed to measles at a local pharmacy on July 3 and July 6.​..

          Child hospitalized as 44 measles cases confirmed in northern Nova Scotia

          A child has been hospitalized as the number of measles cases jumps to 44 in northern Nova Scotia.

          That number is up from the 35 confirmed cases announced on Wednesday.

          Nova Scotia Health says the child is in stable condition at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. It says the family notified the IWK before the child arrived, and the hospital has taken all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of measles to other patients and staff.​..

            Measles exposure at QEII Halifax Infirmary

            Nova Scotia Health Public Health is confirming new measles cases linked to Northern Zone. There are now 61 total cases directly connected to the cases announced in July and August.

            The new cases continue to be mainly found in large households and specific, small communities with close contact.

            The risk to the general public is still considered low; most people are protected from measles by being vaccinated or from previous infection.

            Through their investigation, Public Health has determined that there has been a public exposure related to this investigation at the following location:

            QEII Halifax Infirmary
            1840 Bell Rd., Halifax

            Emergency Department: Sunday, September 7 from 10:45 p.m. to Monday, September 8 at 1:20 a.m.
            Diagnostic Imaging (General Imaging and Ultrasound): Monday, September 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

            It is important to note that anyone who may have been at an exposure site during these times and is pregnant, immunocompromised, or under the age of 12 months old should contact Public Health immediately (902-481-5824).​..

              Measles outbreak over in northern Nova Scotia, no active cases in province

              Nova Scotia Public Health has declared a three-month measles outbreak in the Northern Zone to be officially over.

              The zone, which covers the Colchester-East Hants, Cumberland and Pictou areas, had the localized outbreak declared on July 6. It affected a total of 61 people.

              There are now no known active measles cases in the province.​..
