WILLIAMS COUNTY, N.D. (Valley News Live) - North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed an unvaccinated child from Williams County has the state’s first case of measles since 2011.

HHS believes the child contracted the illness from an out-of-state visitor.

About 180 students under quarantine amid measles outbreak in Williams County
Nine cases already confirmed in western North Dakota, not far from Montana
        By: Michael Achterling - May 9, 2025 1:46 pm

About 180 Williston-area students are isolating at home after three schools were notified by public health officials of measles exposure on their campuses.

Unvaccinated students at Missouri Ridge Elementary, Williston Middle School and Williston High School were told they need to isolate for 21 days to ensure they were not infected, said Paula Lankford, spokesperson for Williston Basin School District 7. The precaution is to prevent students from unknowingly spreading the virus to others.

Health officials on Tuesday confirmed nine cases of measles in Williams County in northwest North Dakota. Daphne Clark, spokesperson for the Upper Missouri District Health Unit, said the measles cases are considered part of an outbreak because health officials believe community spread is occurring without direct contact with known carriers of the illness.

Four people diagnosed with measles were in Williston schools while infectious, the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services said.

The entire campuses of the affected schools were considered exposed, Lankford said...

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) – Confirmed cases of measles in North Dakota increased to 21 this week after the Department of Health and Human Services reported two new cases in Grand Forks County, now the third county to be affected.

Both exposures in Grand Forks County are linked to international travel, according to the department.

Williams County in western North Dakota has 13 cases and Cass County in eastern North Dakota has six confirmed cases, including one person who was hospitalized. All of the North Dakota cases involve people who were unvaccinated, the department said.

Molly Howell, immunization director for HHS, said Friday she is “cautiously optimistic” about the slow spread of the disease in the state that was first confirmed May 2. But she reiterated that it takes two full incubation periods, or 42 days, without any new cases to declare an outbreak over...

The U.S. hit its highest count of measles in three decades. North Dakota has reported 35 cases.

FARGO — North Dakota has reported its first case of measles in more than a month, just as the state hit a milestone that declared the outbreak in the state over.

The state Department of Health and Human Services confirmed to The Forum that the case was reported Thursday, July 10. An unvaccinated person from Williams County who recently traveled out of state contracted the virus, said HHS spokeswoman Mindy Michaels.

The case comes a day after North Dakota hit 42 days without any reports of measles. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers an outbreak to have ended if 42 days have passed without a new report of measles.

The Peace Garden State’s last report of measles was May 28. Thursday’s case brings North Dakota to 35 cases reported this year...
