EDMONTON — Alberta has seen more than 600 cases of measles since early March, as 19 more cases of the highly contagious disease have been confirmed.

The province says 22 are still transmissible and all but two of the new cases are in southern Alberta, the area that has seen most of the province's cases.

Alberta Health Services says the slew of cases is likely due to underreporting, prompting officials to issue an exposure advisory until further notice...

                  May 29, 2025 | 4:11 AM

There has been much discussion about measles in Alberta. There have been a number of cases in the southern part of the province and up around Edmonton. It was only a matter of time that our region would have a case or two.

That is the case as Alberta Health Services has confirmed that a case of measles has been found in Hanna. In a release, they share that a person presented themselves to the Hanna Health Care Centre on May 24th and may have been infectious. The possible exposure was between 4:30 PM and 12:50 AM on May 25th...

Alberta has now confirmed 710 measles cases so far this year, according to new data released Monday, surpassing the 690-case mark set in 1987.

This year now marks the most cases in a calendar year since 1986, when 843 cases were reported.

The initial outbreak this year began in March and the disease has spread throughout the spring, mainly outside of the Calgary and Edmonton health zones.

The South Zone has been the hardest hit, accounting for 520 of the cases so far this year.

The Central Zone has seen 102 cases while the North Zone has seen 69.

No new cases were reported in the Calgary Zone or the Edmonton Zone over the weekend. The province's two most populous health zones have seen a total of 19 cases so far this year, between them.

The spread of measles has occurred primarily among children and teenagers: about 29 per cent of the cases are among kids under the age of five, while 46 per cent are among those between the ages of five and 17...

The U.S. departures area at the Calgary International Airport was the site of a potential measles exposure just over two weeks ago, AHS officials said Wednesday.
                            Article content

The alert warns of an exposure risk at gates 90 and 92 on a 2 p.m. WestJet/Delta flight to Salt Lake City on May 19. The exposure window was around three hours, between approximately 1 p.m. to 4 p.m...

...AHS updated its reported measles cases Wednesday to 749, an increase of 25 cases from the day before. Eighteen of those cases are currently communicable.

Most of Alberta’s measles cases are in children, with 352 cases in those aged between five and 17 years, and 217 infections in children younger than five years.

The province’s South zone has seen 549 cases and the Central health zone has had 103 cases reported. The majority of the new cases, 16, were in the south zone.

A standing measles advisory for the South region has been issued due to the volume of cases reported and the inability to identify and track the sources of infections...

As summer approaches, Alberta's measles case counts are expected to keep climbing and some experts worry transmission will become even more widespread.

With 31 new cases reported over the weekend, Alberta's total case count jumped to 809 by midday Monday.

Five people are currently hospitalized due to the virus, including two patients who are in intensive care.

The outbreaks began in March and while cases have been confirmed in all zones, the south, central and north zones are the hardest hit.

"This is not showing signs of slowing at this point," said Caroline Colijn, a professor and Canada Research Chair of Mathematics for Evolution, Infection and Public Health at Simon Fraser University.
