Ontario's Ministry of Health has announced the first recorded death of a measles patient from the current outbreak that started in October.

Dr. Kieran Moore, chief medical officer of health, issued a statement Thursday saying a southwestern Ontario infant has died after being born prematurely and infected with the highly contagious virus through the mother.

    Moore offered few other details.

Southwestern Public Health, which covers Oxford and Elgin counties, confirmed the child was from a community in their coverage area...

New measles cases increase in northern Ontario

(Toronto) A region in northern Ontario that saw its first measles infection in April is now recording dozens of new cases for the third week in a row.

Public Health Ontario is reporting 96 new cases of measles in the province in the past week, bringing the total to 2,179 since the outbreak began in October.

The Algoma Public Health Unit, which includes Sault Ste. Marie, is reporting 34 of these new infections. Last week, the unit recorded 28 new infections, a number that has increased since April 23, when it reported its first case this year.

This figure brings the total number of cases in the northern health unit to 115, including three hospitalizations.

Dr. John Tuinema, Algoma's associate medical officer of health, said the increase was expected.

"Our first case occurred a few months after much of what happened in southwestern Ontario, so I would say we are in a similar situation to what we saw a few months earlier," explained Dr. Tuinema .

However, he said his northern region likely won't reach the numbers seen in southwestern Ontario due to high vaccination rates and a small population.

According to Algoma Public Health, 87% of 7-year-olds and 97% of 17-year-olds are vaccinated against measles.

"When a case is detected, if it comes into contact with vaccinated people, herd immunity quickly reaches its threshold. But the virus continues to spread in a part of the unvaccinated population. It manifests almost exclusively in private places, such as households," stressed Dr. Tuinema .

The Southwest Public Health Unit, considered the provincial hotbed of the outbreak for the past seven months, has recorded a total of 751 cases.

This figure includes 12 new infections, which have been decreasing week by week over the past month.

Une région du nord de l’Ontario, qui a connu sa première infection de rougeole en avril, enregistre maintenant des dizaines de nouveaux cas pour la troisième semaine consécutive.

Fewer new measles cases in Ontario, public health data shows
              Measles spread slowing
              Nicole Ireland, The Canadian Press - Jul 3, 2025 / 2:28 pm | Story: 559750

A Public Health Ontario report released Thursday suggests a continuing downward trend in new measles cases.

The health agency reported 12 new cases in the province, down from 33 additions last week and 96 the week before that.

Two more people were infected with the highly contagious disease in a northern region that includes Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas. That region had been showing the biggest increase in cases for a few weeks.

Meanwhile, four more people were infected in southwestern Ontario — the area that was hardest hit for months.

Public health officials acknowledged the declining trend but also noted that new cases still emerge weekly and that a reporting lag means it’s possible that infections from previous weeks have not yet been reported.

PHO explained that numbers will dip during an outbreak “as the proportion of susceptible people in communities become immune, through vaccination or infection.”

“PHO will continue to monitor measles data and activity closely in the coming weeks and months,” it said by email.

Ontario has had a total of 2,223 measles cases since an outbreak linked to travel in New Brunswick began last October.

Thursday’s report also deducted one case that had previously been reported in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph. PHO would not reveal details, citing privacy reasons, but said some cases may be reclassified following an investigation...
