Further cases of measles linked to overseas travel have been reported in Melbourne amid a growing outbreak of the highly infectious viral illness in parts of Asia.

The Victorian Department of Health on Friday said there were two new cases of measles in the state's capital, with both residents out in the community while infectious this week.

They attended multiple locations across East Melbourne, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Bentleigh between January 13 and 16, with those places now listed as exposure sites.

Both cases are linked to travel to Vietnam, with the department noting that a further "four recent Victorian measles cases (are) also connected to travel in this region"...

Western Australia's measles outbreak has grown to eight confirmed cases, with authorities warning the number will likely continue to grow.

Three more cases were confirmed by the Department of Health's acting director of communicable diseases, Paul Effler, on Sunday.

Two of those cases were from the Bunbury Regional Hospital exposure site, joining two previously confirmed cases in health care workers.

The other new case has been confirmed in one of the state's prisons.

Hakea Prison in Perth and Bunbury Regional Prison were both on the list of exposure sites.

"We had several more confirmed cases over the weekend which isn't completely surprising," Dr Effler said...

Western Australia has recorded 14 measles cases since 19th March 2025.

Measles cases have been active in the community.

Measles typically develops around 10 days after being exposed to the virus, but this can vary from 7 to 18 days.

Measles is highly infectious and can spread via airborne droplets to people close by (e.g. in waiting rooms). Droplets in the air may still infect people entering a room up to 30 minutes after an infected person has left it.

If someone not already immune to measles visited an exposure location during the specified dates and times below, they are advised to monitor for symptoms between 7 to 18 days after the visit. Persons who have received two measles vaccinations and those born before 1966 are considered immune to measles. There is no ongoing risk of measles at these locations.

Several countries around the world are experiencing measles outbreaks. People travelling to these countries are at risk if they do not have immunity to the measles virus. See smartraveller.gov.au for more information on risk of infectious diseases for Australians overseas.
                    Exposure locations

Anyone who has visited the following locations during the days/times listed, should be vigilant for symptoms of measles, and seek medical advice if symptoms occur.

Two new cases of measles have been confirmed in WA as authorities continue to broadcast an urgent message to vaccinate.

The two cases visited several locations while infectious between April 6 and 11, including Bunbury Regional Hospital on five separate occasions.

Every new exposure site was in the South West region, apart from a two-hour time slot on Wednesday in which an infectious person visited a San Churro cafe at Karrinyup Shopping Centre.

A restaurant, supermarket and a pharmacy were among the other locations.

WA Health advised anyone who visited the locations at the listed dates and times should monitor for symptoms up to 18 days after exposure...

Victoria records highest measles case numbers in a decade amid outbreak
This is the first time in a decade that local transmission of measles has occurred.

While people often brush off measles as just a common illness, it’s now at its highest level in a decade in one Australian state.

So far this year, 23 cases have been recorded in Victoria, and that’s more than the total number detected in all of 2024.

The latest case prompted another health alert from the Victorian Department of Health on Monday, after a returned traveller from Pakistan tested positive.

The returned traveller flew into Melbourne from Dubai on Emirates flight EK408 last Thursday (April 24), with several locations now identified as public exposure sites.

These sites include Melbourne Airport, Westfield Fountain Gate, ALDI Kilmore, Coles Kilmore, Kilmore District Hospital Urgent Care Centre, Kilmore Library and Pet Stock Kilmore.

Victorian Department of Health urges anyone who visited these locations to monitor for symptoms, which can develop between seven to 18 days after exposure...

                            Measles detected in Macedon Ranges
                            02/05/2025

There is currently an increased risk of measles in the Macedon Ranges.

A number of exposure sights have been published by the state government after two new measles cases were reported in Victoria, with one locally acquired with no known links to recent cases of measles.

There are four exposure sites in the Macedon Ranges, all from Saturday, April 19. They are:

                            – Holgate Brewhouse, 79 High St, Woodend from 12.30pm to 1.20pm

                            – Paysanne Cafe, 112 High St, Woodend from 12pm to 1.55pm

                            – Woolworths, 7-11 Jennings St, Kyneton from 3.30pm to 4.30pm

                            – Musk Lane Wine, 1 Turner’s Lne, Kyneton from 4.30pm to 6.15pm

Chief health officer Dr Evelyn Wong recommends anyone who has attended an exposure site during the specified times should monitor for symptoms and seek medical care if symptoms develop for up to 18 days after the exposure, until Wednesday, May 7...
