175’s Infectious ward in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday said that the hospital is treating a 20-year-old man with diphtheria.
Nine day ago, the young man was taken to the hospital when he had fever, sore throat and swollen glands in his neck. Test result conducted by the hospital and by Pasteur Institute has shown that he got diphtheria, a serious infection caused by strains of bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae that make a toxin (poison).
As diphtheria bacteria spread from person to person, usually through respiratory droplets, like from coughing or sneezing. People can also get sick from touching infected open sores or ulcers.
The hospital was quick to inform health –related agencies to disinfect the place where the young man lives and isolate those who had contacted closely with him...

Appropriate treatment, isolation prevent diphtheria transmission in Dak Nong

Medical workers were quick to provide appropriate treatment and strict isolation to prevent transmission of diphtheria in the Central-highlands Province of Dak Nong which has reported outbreak of the fatal disease.

After the outbreak of diphtheria has been reported to the Ministry of Health, the Department of Preventive Medicine has urged the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Highland region to send a group of medical workers to help Dak Nong in implementing preventive measures.

Meantime, the Military Hospital 175 yesterday announced the man with diphtheria, the first case in Ho Chi Minh City, no longer suffers fever, sore throat and swollen glands in his neck. The man took antibiotics to help kill bacteria in the body.

Forty-two medical workers have had close contact with him also took medication while his classmates and his colleagues tested negative for diphtheria.

Also in yesterday, the Tropical Disease Hospital said that it admitted a child patient with diphtheria with heart complication transferred from the General Hospital in Dak Nong Province on June 25.
Previously, the 13 year old child had been taken to the General Hospital in the Highland region while he was suffering fever, coughing, sore throat, breathing problem and serous contagiousness. His parents announced that he had not been vaccinated against diphtheria. He was put in intensive care unit in the hospital in HCMC.

Three cases of diphtheria reported in Kon Tum

The Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on Monday evening reported three cases of diphtheria, bringing the total number in the province since the beginning of this year to eight.


According to the province’s Health Department, the three latest diphtheria patients include two people aged 11 and 25 in Đắk T? District and another aged 10 in Sa Thầy District. They are being treated at the districts’ health care centres and are in a stable condition.

The province’s Centre for Diseases Control on Monday took 36 testing samples in Đắk T? District and 52 in Sa Thầy District.

Vice chairwoman of the province People’s Committee Trần Thị Nga said local authorities isolated people who had close contact with the patients or those suspected to have the disease.

She said local authorities also increased communication and called on people to get fully vaccinated to prevent diseases for themselves and the community.

So far, five out of eight diphtheria cases in the province have tested negative for diphtheria.

By Tuesday, the Central Highlands province of Đắk N?ng had gone seven days without any new cases of diphtheria after four were reported on Kr?ng N? District between June 3 and June 8 and eight cases were reported in Đắk G’long District between June 18 and June 22...

Central Highlands put on high alert as diphtheria cases hit 65

Vietnam's Central Highlands reported 17 cases of diphtheria Tuesday, raising the total to 65 in a month, prompting health authorities to take stronger action against the deadly disease.

With the new cases, Dak Nong now has 25 cases, Kon Tum 23, Gia Lai 16 while Dak Lak has reported its first case.

Four control checkpoints have been erected in Bong Hiot Village of Dak Doa District, Gia Lai, to prevent the 1,400 villagers, all of the Ba Na ethnic group, entry or exit. A four-year-old boy from the village succumbed to diphtheria on Sunday after two days of treatment.

The villagers, often toiling in their fields by day, now remain home awaiting medicine and further instructions on preventing diphtheria...

Vietnam reports three more diphtheria cases in central highlands

HANOI (Xinhua): Three more cases of diphtheria infection have been reported in Vietnam's central highlands Dak Lak province, bringing the total cases in the locality to six cases as of Tuesday (July 14) afternoon.

The new cases were confirmed in two districts of Cu M'gar and M'Drak, Vietnam News Agency reported, noting that local authorities have immediately tracked down and tested close contacts of the infected patients, and disinfected their living areas to prevent the spread of the outbreak.

Earlier on Saturday, central highlands Gia Lai province also reported one more diphtheria case, bringing the total cases in the locality to 20. Diphtheria infections soar to 93 in Central Highlands
Vietnam's Central Highlands provinces are battling a fast-spreading diphtheria outbreak, with 15 new cases recorded in the last two days.

In just over a month, diphtheria has struck four provinces in the region with 93 infections in total and three deaths.

Dak Lak has reported six new cases of diphtheria over the past two days, raising its total to 12. Among the new cases was a 19-year-old woman, now 38 weeks pregnant.

Trinh Quang Tri, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Dak Lak Province, said the pregnant H’Mong patient from Krong Bong District visited a local medical center for a health check Tuesday after developing symptoms including fever, a headache, sore throat and fatigue...

Ia O border commune restricts and prevents diphtheria from spreading

Diphtheria epidemic is complicated in Gia Lai province. As of July 17, the provincial health sector has recorded 24 cases positive for diphtheria bacteria (Corynebacterium diphtheria).

Notably, within only 15 days after detecting the first death due to diphtheria, Gia Lai province's health sector repeatedly detected positive cases of diphtheria bacteria in many communes, of which remarkable I mean the case in Ia O border commune, Ia Grai district. Facing this situation, functional departments as well as local authorities have been trying to prevent the disease from spreading.

According to a report from the Ia Grai District Health Center (Gia Lai Province), the first reported case in O village, Ia O commune was a 5-year-old girl who had been diagnosed since July 7. The family bought medicine for treatment at home for 1 week, until the illness became severe, the family sent the child to the District Health Center to examine and be transferred to treatment at Gia Lai Children's Hospital. Initial epidemiological investigation showed that her family members had previously had contact with relatives from Kon Tum. This 5-year-old girl has not been vaccinated in the extended vaccination program.

Immediately after the discovery of the aforementioned case, the health sector and the local government implemented a screening and provision of diphtheria preventive medicine for over 650 people in O village. Besides, the local government also set up 4 propaganda groups to implement well preventive measures, guide people to take prophylactic antibiotics with enough doses within 7 days. In areas with diphtheria, prophylactic antibiotics are an important factor in cutting off the source of transmission. In parallel with the propaganda for the people, the local authorities also set up isolation barriers located at 4 entrances to and from the villages.

At present, the prevention of diphtheria in Ia O border communes is facing many difficulties. Most of the people in the commune are ethnic minorities, their awareness about the disease and how to prevent it are limited. In addition, the vaccination for preventive vaccines under the expanded vaccination programs here is very low. According to statistics in Ia O commune, the vaccination rate in 2019 reached only 73%, particularly in O village - where there is a case of diphtheria, only about 60%.

Ms. Ro Cham Byih, Deputy Head of Ia O Commune Health Station, Ia Grai District, said: People have a perception that when they take their children for injection, they often have fever, fuss, and illness, so their parents should stay at home to take care of them. I can't work as a squirrel. Therefore, they are afraid to take their children for vaccination. Although the commune has mobilized, propagated and explained a lot, it is still very difficult to move their awareness. Some people perceive misleading prevention for their children, leading to some not being vaccinated or not being fully vaccinated.

Predicting the situation of diphtheria disease which continues to be complicated and difficult to predict, the delegation of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Center for Disease Control in Gia Lai Province is continuing to coordinate with the Medical Center. Ia Grai district authorities, together with local authorities, reviewed cases of close contact with diphtheria cases to provide prophylaxis.

The authorities also actively guide people to implement measures to prevent and limit travel, if signs of fever, cough, immediately go to the medical facility. Through screening, functional agencies detected 2 cases showing signs of suspicion of disease, so isolated and sampled samples. In addition, all O villagers have been provided with preventive medicine to cut off the source of infection. The local health sector will soon launch a diphtheria vaccination campaign for people in the commune.

(Today) - Dak Lak Health Industry has just recorded 2 more positive cases for diphtheria, including a 9-year-old girl.



On the afternoon of August 21, the leader of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Dak Lak province said that there were just 2 more confirmed cases of diphtheria in the area.

They are a 40 year old man (Ede ethnic group, residing in Tram village, Cu M'gar commune, Cu M'gar district) and a 9 year old girl (H'Mong ethnic group, residing in Cu Te village, commune Cu Pui, Krong Bong district).

One day earlier (August 20), the health sector also recorded a case in Lak district. The patient is a female, 14 years old, ethnic M’nong, residing in Pai Ar village, Dak Phoi commune.

So far, Dak Lak has 38 cases of diphtheria. In the whole Central Highlands, there are more than 100 people suffering from this disease, of which there are 39 cases in Dak Nong province, 44 cases of Kon Tum and 35 cases of Gia Lai.

Facing the complicated development of the diphtheria epidemic, the People's Committee of Dak Lak province issued an urgent dispatch to implement measures to prevent diphtheria.

Accordingly, the health sector is assigned to closely monitor the epidemic situation, monitor exposure, take test samples, detect early and suspected cases of disease to isolate, treat and preventive treatment. and promptly zoning and handling disease pests in a timely and proper manner in order to control epidemic outbreaks and spread in the community.

HANOI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The city of Buon Ma Thuot in Vietnam's central highlands province of Dak Lak reported its first case of diphtheria infection, Vietnam News Agency reported on Friday.

The latest case is a 3-year-old boy in Cu Ebur commune of Buon Ma Thuot who was confirmed to have tested positive for the diphtheria virus on Wednesday, according to the report.
