    Annandale avoids whooping cough outbreak

    While neighboring Maple Lake schools have been hit by an outbreak of pertussis, or whooping cough, it hasn't been a problem in the Annandale School District, school nurse Nancy Lipinski says.

    According to the Wright County Public Health Department, more than 40 cases have been confirmed in the Maple Lake area, most of them in children at Maple Lake Elementary School and St. Timothy's Catholic School, and there have been a few in Monticello.

    But only one case had been diagnosed in an Annandale school, and no other symptoms had been spotted, Lipinski said last week.

    "Nothing at all even remotely has indicated there's been any ... increase in pertussis in the district," she said...

    Whooping cough hits Wright County

    An outbreak of whooping cough in Wright County has schools and public health officials taking measures to contain the disease.

    Health officials have confirmed 46 cases of the highly-contagious disease in the Maple Lake area.

    Most of the cases were diagnosed in students from Maple Lake Elementary and St. Timothy's Catholic School...

    ...The last wave in Minnesota peaked in 2005 with more than 1,500 confirmed cases.

    Last year Minnesota reported more than 1,000 cases.

    There is a vaccine, but it loses its effectiveness over time. Health officials believe that is why they're seeing more cases among fifth and sixth graders who received the vaccine before they entered kindergarten. Seventh graders get boosters...

      School officials say they are preparing for the potential of a growing number of whooping cough cases this year after St. Cloud school district reported its first case of the year this week...

      ...The Minnesota Department of Health has reported 395 cases of whooping cough in Minnesota in 2010. Of those, 29 were in Stearns County, 20 in Sherburne County and nine in Benton County.

      In 2009, there were 1,100 cases in Minnesota, including 218 in Stearns County, the most of the 87 counties.

        MINNEAPOLIS - There have been many cases of the whooping cough, which is also called the 100-day cough.

        Minnesota is in another peak year for whooping cough, which goes by the clinical name Pertussis. There have been 1,000 cases in the state this year. The most cases coming in Hennepin, Dakota and Ramsey counties. It?s the third year in a row that we will top 1,000 cases, ?a peak period? says the state health department that began in 2008. The disease peaks every three to five years...
